Rules applying to "Server Channels" on irc.j-body.org
Version 1.4
Drafted March 1, 2002
Revised November 4, 2003

"Server Channels", as the term is used in the title of this page, are the public chat rooms that are (or are planned to be) directly accessible from the J-Body Organization Chat web site.  As of this writing, these rooms include #jbody, #jbodyhelp, #appearance, #audio, #bash, #events, #maintenance, #offtopic, #performance and #suspension.  By using any of these public rooms, the user acknowledges they are aware of these rules and agree to be bound by them.  Channel Operators in the rooms are there to help enforce these rules.  Enforcement of these rules is left to their discretion.  If you would like more information on these rules or would like to make a suggestion, please contact us or join #jbodyhelp and ask to be contacted by a Server Administrator.

The following rules and regulations are provided to help ensure everyone's chatting experience is as pleasant as possible.    Failure to adhere to the rules of the channel can result in being temporarily or permanently removed from a chat room.

Other channels established by users on the server are considered "private channels" and the founders and operators of those channels may set whatever rules they wish.

  1. OPERATOR DISCRETION
Using J-Body Chat is supposed to be a pleasant experience for all involved.  As such, there will be times where individuals will be removed from Chat even though they haven't violated the "letter of the rules".  People who are obviously using J-Body Chat as an avenue to stir up trouble or whose presence in a chat room incites problems are obvious examples.  Chat Operators are given broad discretion in this area as it is their responsibility to ensure J-Body Chat is the kind of forum people can get information from and would want to return to.

  2. PRIVACY
Invading the personal privacy of other members of the channel is strictly forbidden.  J-Body IRC administration and operators do not guarantee the privacy of the channel's members.  It is the responsibility of the channel members to protect their personal information on the internet.  If you publish your personal information it is not the responsibility of the administration or operators to stop other members of the channel from finding and using it.

  3. PROFANITY
Some profanity is tolerated. All of the J-Body Organization "Server Channels" have a filter built into them that will screen out language that has been deemed inappropriate for public channels.  The screened language will be replaced with "@!#$", similar to the J-Body forums.  Some language can get through this filter, but repeated use of offensive language is still frowned upon.  Repeated use of such language can subject the user to temporary removal from the channel or temporary bans at the discretion of the channel operators.  Remember--"colorful language" sometimes makes a conversation interesting, but it really doesn't have to be "in full technicolor" all the time, so to speak.  NOTE:  Because of the nature of the #offtopic room there is no filter on the channel itself, but operators still may use their discretion in enforcing this rule.

  4. OFFENSIVE NICKNAMES
Profanity within your nick name can be and often is distasteful.  Please refrain from using nicks which contain profanity or which may be offensive to other channel members.  Nicknames found registered in violation of this rule will be removed and repeated violation of this rule may result in suspension or revocation of services priveleges for the person involved.

  5. HARASSMENT
Harassment of any person in the channel will not be tolerated.  The definition of harassment is a subjective one, so we will provide some guidelines as to what may not be acceptable behavior in the channel.  Ultimately this is a judgement call left to the discretion of the operators and their decisions are final..

  6. SERVICES ABUSE
Registrations of channel names or nicknames that are clearly meant to harass, embarrass, inconvenience or otherwise cause any kind of trouble for a user, channel or server will be immediately removed and the person registering them may have their Services priveleges suspended or revoked at the discretion of the Services Operators. "Stealing" of registered nicknames or channel names will be investigated to the extent that our services allow, but it is incumbent on the owner of those nicks or channels to make sure their password is secure. Always remember that your password is your key. Protect it as you would protect the keys to your car, because whoever has the password owns the channel or nickname.  JBO Chat policy is to give a user "first choice" of their J-Body Organization registered name as a chat nick but beyond that nickname registrations are "first come, first served".  The same policy applies for channel names for J-Body Organization registered clubs or businesses.  Beyond the protections afforded by this rule, any unused, unregistered nickname or channel name are fair game and may be registered by anyone.

  7. CHANNEL OPERATORS
Do not ask or beg for ops.  The J-Body IRC administrators have chosen people they feel who are responsible and understand the rules that have been put in place.  If the administrators feel there is a need for additional ops they will add them as necessary, from people they feel will be able to handle the task. In short, if more ops are needed and you're to be one of them, an administrator or IRC operator will contact you.

  8. TEMPORARY OR INTERIM CHANNEL OPERATORS (HALF-OPS)
Use of Half-Op status in the channels is meant to be a step toward becoming a permanent operator.  This gives channel operators time to help you along in learning how the channel runs and give you time to become familiar with all the commands and/or scripts to use as an operator.  If you are given temporary ops in the channel act responsibly and do not abuse the privilege.  Doing so will cause you to lose your ops and hurt your chances of becoming a permanent op in the future.

  9. UNSOLICITED PRIVATE MESSAGES
Sending personal messages against the wishes of the receiver is not allowed.  If you do not know the person please at least ask in channel for their permission before sending a private message.

  10. FLOODING
Flooding the channel with text and/or graphics is strictly forbidden.  Violators will be immediately removed and may be subject to temporary or permant bans from the channel or server.

  11. COLORIZED TEXT, GRAPHICS, ETC.
Excessive use of color, CAPS, graphics (ansi or otherwise), "banner" or "elite-text" type scripts can sometimes be annoying and rude, therefore we ask that you use good judgement in their use in the channel.  The web client uses color, but generally only one color of text per line.  This is not considered excessive and therefore is not covered by this rule.

  12. SCRIPTS
We understand that many users have chat clients that they have enhanced with "scripts", or automated commands, to make things easier for them while on IRC.  Most of these scripts are useful, but some (usually called "war scripts") are malicious.  Users will not be kicked from a channel for simply having one of these scripts installed, but if any of the malicious functions of that script are shown in the channel, they will be removed and possibly banned.  Also, public server channels are not scripting channels.  Please use private channels to test your scripts.

  13. TIMED MESSAGES, MP3 BANNERS OR OTHER BANNERS, "AUTO-AWAY" MESSAGES, "BOTS"
Please refrain from using scripts that place MP3 banners ("I am listening to..."), "I am Away.." messages, "Clone Alerts", advertisements, banners or other automated or timed messages into the channel.  This includes "bot" scripts that have not been approved by J-Body Administrators.  Bots that accept input from channel users (!commands, question/answer or game-bots) are not permitted on J-Body IRC public channels.

  14. NUKING, CONNECTION FLOODING
Nuking, Smurfing, CTCP flooding, ICMP/ping flooding, dcc flooding, or any other attempt to disrupt a channel members internet connection or connection to J-Body IRC is strictly prohibited.  Any documented attempt to do so will result in a permanent ban from J-Body Chat and will reported to your ISP for appropriate action.  Also take note that there is always someone who is better then you and you may have decided to Nuke the wrong person.

  15. HACKING
Hacking of any kind is strictly prohibited.  Any user caught attempting to hack, corrupt or otherwise disturb another user's computer or any of the server hardware and software used by J-Body Chat will be permanently banned.  This information will also be forwarded to their ISP for appropriate action.

  16. BAN EVASION
Ban evasion is not permitted.  This means simply that if you are banned, you are banned.  You are not permitted to be in that channel for any reason until the ban is lifted.  While there many ways through IRC and IP addressing to get around these bans, having that knowledge does not give you license to use it.  If you are banned from a channel and use any method to regain entry to that channel (changing addresses, etc.) you will be banned from the channel again and it will be reported to J-Body Chat administrators or IRC operators for action that could include being banned from the entire server.

  17. THREATENING BEHAVIOR
Threatening behavior toward any other user of the channel is absolutely not tolerated.  This includes, but is not limited to:  threats of physical harm, threats of damage to one's vehicle or other property or threats of damage or access to one's computer (see #15-Hacking).  Users engaging is such behavior can be immediately banned from the room in question and may be banned from the server.  In severe cases, the behavior will be reported to the user's ISP and to appropriate authorities in their jurisdiction.

  18. PERSONAL ARGUMENTS
Bringing personal conflicts with other members of the channel into the channel is frowned upon and is disrespectful of others, therefore please refrain from carrying on personal arguments in channel.  Please take it to a private channel, private messages or AIM.

  19. WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BANNED
To dispute a ban from an individual channel please first discuss it with the person who placed the ban.  If you cannot resolve the dispute in this fashion, contact an IRC operator who will attempt to act as a mediator in the discussion.  The /trace command will show you the IRC operators that are currently online.  If you wish to dispute a ban from the server, please contact us and an IRC Administrator will contact you.

These rules are subject to change without notice.
