Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference, but this should help you figure out what you have under the hood:
2000-2005 model years, 5 speed cars all used the "Getrag" transmission (F23), regardless of engine. The bellhousing and gearing is different between 2.2L, 2.4L, and 2200 engines, and is not easily interchangeable.
1995-1999 model years, 5 speed cars all used the "Isuzu" transmission, regardless of engine. Again, the bellhousing is different between the 2.3L/2.4L and 2.2L engines, and is not easily interchangeable. Despite being designed by Isuzu, this transmission was ultimately built by GM and uses weaker parts than the Isuzu-built ones used in their cars. (Yes, you can find and swap them)
1995-2005 model years, 4 speed automatic cars all used the Hydramatic 4T40E transmission. It is easy to tell, if your shifter reads "PRND321" then this is the transmission you have. It is an electronically-controlled transmission, and as such can use electronic hacks such as the B&M Shiftplus or Autotrans Interceptor to adjust line pressure.
1995-2002 model years, 3 speed automatic cars all used the Hydramatic 3T40 transmission. It is easy to tell, if your shifter reads "PRND21" then this is the transmission you have. It is a VacuumWhat you're engine is under, when it isn't boosted.-controlled transmission, and as such CANNOT use electronic hacks such as the B&M Shiftplus or Autotrans Interceptor. This is the strongest transmission found in J-body cars, but also the slowest.
