What about changing the head/compression?

It is possible to mate a 2.3L engine head with a 2.4L block, but it is not a direct bolt-on installation.

There was an article in HOT ROD magazine in around 2000 regarding a head swap on a 2.4L LD9. It stated that a head from a 1989 Beretta GTU with the 2.3L quad 4 engine (RPO code is LHO) would work. However there are some sacrifices that would have to be made like loss of power steering. The older head uses a pulley with a remotely loacted power steering pump and the LD9 does not provide the provisions for this particular application. It also stated that yhe LD9 intake and exhaust would not work, but that the LHO applocation has a better flow rate on both sides of the head. It also stated that the head has a smaller combustion chamber, and that the cams have a more aggressive profile than the LD9. With that said about the cams, they ARE NOT interchangable. The bearing journals on the LHO are smaller than that of the LD9. I don't remember the estimated gain by doing the swap, but if my memory serves me correctly, it is a substantial gain. And for those that are willing to try it, there is more than I have listed here that needs to be done when completing the swap. I don't think it is anything major, but there is more to it. It sounded like a pretty simple part for part swap. But my recommendation would be to do a little research and find out what exactly is needed to complete the swap.
