has anyone received e-mails about covering up your vin number so that potential thieves cant call in to a dealership and get a copy of your key made my aunt sent me one and i find it total bull@!#$ i searched for a while and couldn't find anything on how the keys for cars were made possible or no? your expert advice should make this a quite interesting argument any proof or website you happen to know of would also be helpful I'm a pretty knowledgeable car guy and figure they just don't have your key info posted on the dashboard but then again engineers and designers aren't all that smart

hey, this is actually true. i had some rust proofing done at good ol' walmart, they locked my keys in the car, and stupid me had no spare available. they called the dealership, i gave vin number, and for $45 the dealer gets your key code for that vin, a new key can be cut.........THAT EASY

Yup, there was actually a Dateline or 60 minutes on it awhile back...

when walmart f'd mine up, the dealership DID ask for drivers license #, but of course that was in the car as well. they cut the key, with only the vin for verification, even delivered, then didn't stick around to get license # or verify that key was in car. seems suspicious if i were on the other end, guy want's to pay close to fifty for a key cut, when he/she could call tow truck to get in for 35
at my dealership...you have to bring your drivers license, registration and or title...and we keep a record of who we cut keys for.....we never ever do it over the phone....

this one was in a small ass town near northbay, one of those "we're all honest" type towns...........also found out other sunfire keys can open a sunfires trunk.......that made me even happier............some random sunfire key poped my trunk, but not door locks
This is very interesting. I guess you just have to pray if your in that situation that the dealer asks all the right questions to find out if its really you or a thief.

i used to work at a chevy dealership and i used to be able to use my 96 cav door key to open just about half of the cars on the lot ( between the years of about 96 - 99 ) i can use it to open the doors on my dads S-10
^^^ that's cause GM can only come up with so many key combinations. eventually, they are going to have to use the same key combination for different cars. so chances are, your key will open quite a few GM cars.
With VW you can't get a copy of a key made anywhere except through VW, and you have to have your vin to do it, I don't think they require anythign else

It'd be a bit of a stretch for someone to steal a car this way, they have to find your VIN, drive to the dealer, get keys made pay 50 bucks. I doubt criminals would go through this much trouble, at least for our cars lol.

I didn't say you could cut the key with the vin, i said you need the vin and no it doesn't have to come form mexico (I'm a VW tech I know what I'm talking about) customer brings there car in we give thee vin number to parts, parts orders a cut thats cut at the regional parts wearhouse and ships it to us, and even once you get the key you cannot use it, you have to program the imobilzer to accept that specific key which can only be done by using the VW scan tool to get the imobilzre number and the vin, you have to go into VW's computer system (everythign password protected) and look up an enabling pin that is valid for 24 hours only and that specific vehicle only, then you can go in with a VW scan tool unlock the dash panel panel insert, delete te learned values, and reprogrma it to the key, but you need every key for the car present at teh time, you have to reprogram all of them
Yeah my sister had to have a new key made for her Bravada and the guy did it for free. That was pretty cool of him.
I dont think he checked anything though just asked for the VIN.
The thing is most people and crimnals are probably too stupid to know that this can be done. In that way it kind of protects itself.

There a Toyota Dealership in New England( I wont give the name, dont want to make easy for thiefs), that you can just walk in with your VIN and a Said story and get a Key. No ID check or anything. My boss at one of his job, lost his key, and called toyota and in a matter of mintues he had a key.

In case anyone forgot, that's how GM's semi that housed the prototype cars
(cavalier TURBO & sunfire S/C) got jacked. They had a key for the semi cut & stole it all.

not that smart eh.... just rember that we are pretty much the ones that make the world go round. about everything that you use in life was designed and engineered. True that there are somethings that are designed and we ask.... what the *^(&( where they thinking (aztek) but in the end we designers and engineers are told what to do by "the powers that be" (bosses) ..... every wonder why concepts always look better than production models?? higher power steps in.
the vin location has been placed there for many reasons.. one of them for the police to also id cars other than plates.
