GM airbag crash data.....you need to know this...
Tuesday, July 20, 2004 8:19 PM
We have a website I think your members would find to be very interesting.

GM dealers do not use this equipment. Most people do not know this equipment even exists. It does...

Its a website for GM and Saturn cars. Trucks too.

Any questions about the airbag SDM, we will try to supply the answers.

Hello I know this is a little late for this forum, but i need help. I read the other forum that was linked. My question is does the airbag black box document every impact or only when the airbags are deployed. I am asking because i know there are sensors which determine whether to release or not. Some kid driving an 04 cavalier hit my 86. I need a way to defend myself and prove he was speeding. The road was only 25 mph so if he was going about 35 that information would be of much help. Thank you

There can be 2 types of crash data stored in the air bag SDM.

Deployment: This is where the air bags have deployed. The crash data is permently stored in the air bag SDM. The SDM must be replaced if the car is repaired.

Near Deployment: This is the same type of crash data stored as a deployment. The near deployment file will erase after 250 key cycles or will be overwritten if there is another crash event. It can also be wiped out if the SDM module is bumped while powered up.

The crash data that is available:

Vehicle speed (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Engine speed (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Brake status (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Throttle position (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Driver's seat belt state (On/Off)
Passenger's airbag enabled or disabled state (On/Off)
Airbag Warning Lamp status (On/Off)
Time from vehicle impact to airbag deployment
Maximum Delta-V ( DV ) for near-deployment event
Delta-V ( DV ) vs. time for frontal airbag deployment event
Time from vehicle impact to time of maximum Delta-V ( DV )
Time between near-deploy and deploy event (if within 5 seconds)

So yes, very likely the 2004 Cavalier has near deployment crash data stored in it. GM dealers cannot collect the crash data using a GM Tech 2. You must use a Vetronix CDR and a laptop.

Just because he was speeding won't relieve you of fault... I've lost that argument in court before.

Well.... your airbags won't work... and you'll have a couple of red lights that stay on in your gauge cluster.... but black tape solves that
