Last digits of VIN, serial #
Thursday, May 05, 2005 8:28 PM
I've done some research for curiousity's sake, and found that the serial number of my car is: 523839. It is a very early 1995 third-gen (Sunfire)... So how can this be?

Did GM roll the Sunfire serial numbers onto the end of the Sunbird's serial numbers? Or did GM produce that many Sunfires in just a few months?

I ordered the car in Nov. 94 and received it in May 95 after numerous strikes and production line probs way-back-when... And it just seemed like an oddball number to me...

If I'm on the right track, is there a way to find out what number SUNFIRE that I have -- excluding the Sunbird numbers?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

lenko got back to me -- props to him!

He wrote:

"From what I know.. Cavalier serial numbers started at 0, sunfires at 500000, convertibles at 900000.. So you would have the 23,839th Sunfire off the line for the 95 model year, out of 81,097 Sunfires made that year.

Production switches in September? For the next model year. "

Thanks guys for your help....

I was told that it was "early," but that might just be because of the transmission. I had test driven an auto sedan on one dealer's lot, and drove a Cavi coupe (auto) on another's, but from what I recall, the manual trannys weren't available at that time (and that was early to mid-November)...

You're right, tho, I don't have an early Fire, it is about 1/3 of the way thru the serial numbers for that year, according to Lenko, but I was interested to see where it fell in the way of trannys as well.

It was the first manual transmission sold from my dealership anyhow!

It is a curiousity more than anything. I thought it would be cool to find out.
