If the deal requires you send them money back (they give you a $5000 money order, you keep $500, send them $4500), then its a scam. Do you have more information? Maybe the email he sent...

oh yeah! haha here...

Dear Mr.Winter,

The information we have is that the check will be delivered today if not, then tomorrow. We understand that it is coming through regular mail which explains the delay.

We also understand that a Bank Money Order was sent to you and that it is as good as cash and would clear your bank on presentation. It is instant cash at the Banks. Therefore take them to your bank and cash. The order was purchased by a JEREMY TRUMBLE and it is for $5000.

We have further been informed by Mr.Trumble that the check was sent inside a greeting card. Therefore,do be careful in opening the greeting card when it comes.

Deduct the cost of the Hood as we agreed and have the balance sent by MONEY GRAM TO RALPH MICHAEL WILLIAMS IN HOLLAND.The other name for Holland is the NETHERLANDS.Money Gram says that you will need cash to be able to send the money. They do not require any address.

On sending the money through a Money Gram point, please send to us by email, the THE CONTROL NUMBERS,THE EXACT AMOUNT SENT AS WELL AS THE NAMES AND ADDRESS OF THE SENDER IF DIFFERENT FROM YOU.

On receipt of the money,Michael will make arrangements for the Hood to be picked from you.At pick up,you do not need to give them any money. They will give you a call to arrange for pick up.The information we have is that they have representatives in all states of the US and in Canada.
We are believing that you will be able to do this today or as soon as you get the check.Looking forward to hearing from you.Thank you and God bless you.

Best Regards,

WILLIAM LEWIS.

NOTELEASE ASK MONEY GRAM TO CONVERT THE MONEY TO EURO AND INFORM YOU OF WHAT IT COMES TO.IF NOT,IT SHOULD BE SENT IN US DOLLARS.COST OF SENDING TO BE DEDUCTED FROM THE BALANCE MONEY.

IT HAS ALSO BEEN DECIDED THAT YOU KEEP AN EXTRA $200 FOR YOUR TIME AND TROUBLE AND FOR TIME WASTED.

Here under are the list of Money Gram Agents in your locality.

do what I do, use the check to start a new account. Never send the ass hat any money. Then withdraw all the money from the account because it will "clear" but it will eventualy be returned after it clears.

You have the money, the bank gets screwed.. oops guess they have to find the person who wrote the check.

Okay, i know im probably stupid for asking, but how does this scam work anyway? I am dealing with a guy right now from the UK offering me $2350 for stuff and send the remaining $2000 back.

Is there a way to get the best of him? Or does he have the upper hand?

Thanks

The scam is simple - they send you a money order or cashiers check for an amount higher then what you are asking for the product. They instruct you to cash it and send them the difference. Your bank will accept the check, however it takes a few days for it to come back unfunded - because it is a fake. In that time period you will have already sent the funds - which they pocket, and you lose as soon as the bank pulls that money from your account.

No, there is no way to get the upper hand in this scam. The only thing you can do is ignore them.

As for opening a new account with that check - that will not work, because any bank will put a hold on those funds until they clear - in which time you can not withdraw money. With rare exception, the only kind of funds a bank will not put a hold on when you open an account is cash.

The checks do clear. They are funded as an international transfer and won't come back bounced untill a few weeks after they "clear" when the bank they are drawn from gets the check and finds out it's a fake.
