Buying a Salvaged title car
Sunday, January 22, 2006 4:51 PM
Is thier anything wrong with buying a salvage titled car? If it was all repaired and everything is their anything else i should be worried about. Would i be able to get it title in my name and insured? Any problems i might encounter? thanks

Just make sure everything was repaired properly, that should be the only big worries about the vehicle. Yes, you can get it titled and insured in your name, my girl's car has a salvage title, and she bought it just like you would buy any car.

it would pass inspection if everything is fixed properly.

insurance depends on your insurance company.

My car has a salvaged title.
It depends a little on where you live. Some states a salvage title means it was stolen or some other stuff that doesn't mean it was in a wreck. If it was in a wreck, just make sure, like said above, that it was repaired correctly.
My insurance wasn't any more than what a normal title would cost.
It should pass inspection fine as long as it was repaired correctly.
The only problem you may run into is if you ever wanted to trade it in to a dealer to buy a new car, most dealers tend to shy away from salvage titles but just don't ever sell ur car, sell it privately or find a good dealer and u'll be fine.

www.standardautowreckers.com go down to standard for you, and click on mandtory branding. this is for ontario but should give you an idea of what your looking at. it defines everything that would give a car a brand

My car was a salvage title, now it's got a rebuilt title. Check your state requirements. In my state I had to have various pictures and reciepts to get it plated, so just call your DMV and ask what you will need to plate it.

I would highly reccomend against modifying a salvage title car. As a daily driver it would be fine.

^ i'm guessing it's because salvage-titled cars are worth a lot less money if you would ever decide to sell it... but, it's a Cavalier, so they're not worth anything to start

salvage title or not, you never get out of a car what you put into it when you mod it.

usually salvage/irreparable titles are only put on cars with serious structural damage i.e. frame, supports.pillars ect,

wow, that's not even close to being true. salvage titles are put on cars when an insurance company, or in some cases a fleet owner if they are self insured, find the cost of repair to be more than the reasonable value or book value of the vehicle. for cavaliers, rent-a-car places will often "total" a cavalier for as little as $1500 in damages since they are self inssured. this is pretty much any time the air pag pops or they destroy more than 1 body panel in an accident. Now Flood damage titles I wouldn't touch unless it was an older car.

But you should be able to get as much as you can out of it.

I know for a fact there going to have to tow my sunfire away with me kicking and screaming before I get rid of it....

I would suppose that it would br different from state to state...

I saw a Malibu for cheap, and it was rear-ended...and a friend looked at it, it it turned out to be a decent drive from what I heard.( though I did not drive it)

Either way, I see no problem with one as a beater, or the next modded one...

in ONTARIO that is the branding information, i did not say it was for the US too just ontario. i got it from the government branding web site. all i was saying is that this is what will give a car a brand in ONTARIO. so yes it is true.

you didn't say anything about ONTARIO in your post. I just assumed you lived in a real country.

True, the damn air-bags have caused more cars to be salvaged than ever before.

Re: Buying a Salvaged title car

My car is a salvaged title, the original owner rear-ended another car with damage to the hood, front bumper cover and front fenders. There was no structural damage and everything has been running fine for the 2.5 years I've had the car. Title and insurance weren't that difficult, its as if you were buying a new car.

The only thing I would look into was what happened to the car in the accident/failure. It may be a good idea to have a trusted shop look the car over and see if everything is fine.

Blown.

My car is a salvage title and i've not had any trouble at all out of it other than a bad ICM. I got it basically brand new for dirt cheap, she had 2900 miles on it. Probably won't be able to sell it for much, but I don't really plan on it. If it's a car you're going to keep for a while, I'd say go for it, just check it out first and make sure the work is done correctly.

make sure everything is fixed right! my dad bought a salvaged civic(yea, i know a civic) but he had that much trouble with that car it wasnt even fit, when we took the car off the road to do some body work on the car, we had to get it inspected and when we did, the frame of the car was not fixed, soooooo we had to pay to get that all done, so be very carefull when buying salvaged car............

What the deuce?
