The first Ecotecs were built for Saturn in 2000. I have pics of one dated 2000 with a Saturn sticker on it somewhere. Will post if someone reminds me! This motor had the yellow oil filler cap on it.

Ecotec I think was the first GM motor to be designed for lost foam casting.

^Saturn LS (2000 model year) but the car was running/sold since summer 1999.
And no Ecotec was not the first, the 2200 had lost foam casting and Saturn's 1.9L (pioneer) has had it since 1990.

I think I know what 1.9L you are talking about now!
I think that was in its SC2's.

Did that motor have a black plastic valve cover and the exhaust manifold on the front?

^^^
The 1.9L was found on all Saturn S-series. They were either SOHC 8-valve(SL, SL1, SW1,SC1) or DOHC (SL2, SW2, SC2).
Later years they carried black composite valve covers. In the beginning they carried aluminum. And yes, the exhaust manifold was in the front.
These engines were in action from model year 1991-2002 in all S-series Saturns.
