the LS Sport wasn't good enough to hold the Z24 RPO code in america... or GM was trying to phase out the Z## RPO Codes

all the Z codes are now gone, except for the Corvette. After this summer there will only be two Chevy two door coupes left standing. the Camaro and the Corvette. So I guess if one wanted a two door GM vehicle you will only have those two to choose from. I really hope they are going to really produce a two door Cruze.

I think cavalier will be back one day. How long who knows. It was Gm's best selling car for a very long time.

Hang on a moment.... Z24 an RPO code?? I thought that was only for the 1985 model year?

Unless you're talking about the original Z24 RPO code for a 1967-1969 Impala SS 427

agreed. yes they were considered crap by alot of people. but one of GMs best selling cars. and one of the top selling 4 cyl cars on the road. i mean, sh1t, i see more j cars on the road than any other 4cyl car out. they will bring the na,e back. but not on a dead J platform. it would be on some new platform that is far superior, and none of the parts would ever be swapable with our current J cars! thats just my opinion.

I love my Cavalier Z24 and will make sure that it is represented as long as I'm alive.
20 years from now, they'll all be reveling at the sight of it at car shows.

Pretty good opinions coming out in this thread, and I agree with the dragged out life of the sunfire and cavalier. In saying that, the death of the cobalt/pursuit/g5 should be looked at as a good thing - a 2010 car that still has the handling of comparable cars 10 years older then it. Yes, I know that making a car with better handling requires more moving parts, more parts to possibly fail, and overall more expensive to maintain and replace, although people do not maintaining something that will treat them well and they put faith in.But this is 2010 and GM is still making @!#$ty cars with semi-independant rear suspension and sluggish front suspension, this has to change. I hope the cavalier never comes back - but if it does I hope GM does some advanced homework and look at the competition and keep on top of it. Most of the mods, both interior and exterior, that were done to the cavalier/sunfire were on this site - and then GM made the changes at the manufacturer for the 03-05 years. They need to make a young reliable car which appeals to a wide niche under $20k again. What would you buy at the GM lot if you were to buy this style of car for 2011? I know if I could afford a new vehicle I wouldn't be looking at any GM products.

Ive have FIVE Cavaliers. 96 coupe, 97 convertible, 98 coupe, 04 coupe and my current 03 sedan. People talk crap about the Cavalier but none of mine ever left me on the side of the road. they are easy to repair, cheap to insure, gets good fuel economy. I am thinking of buying a new car this summer so I might have to sell the Cavalier. I dont need three cars for myself. I also have a 2006 Pontiac G6 GT. right now I am looking at a 2010 Cobalt LT coupe or a 2010 Camaro LS.

you guys are @!#$ high if you truly believe GM will bring back the cavalier. it's got such a bad stigma attached to it, it's never coming back.

car companies know to never bring back the nameplate of a car with such a stigma. that'd be like GM bringing back the chevette, or dodge the omni. it's just not going to happen.

Same thing happened to the Pontiac Fiero.
Really i'm not shocked the Cobalt is cancelled, i'm more shocked GM is completely abandoning the turbo LNF motor altogether from their compact line-up.

I'd also add, i truly think you will see the name "Z24" again, but never Cavalier.

i disagree
In terms of performance, the Cavalier's got game. It runs 0-60 in 8.2 seconds, versus 9.1 for the Civic. The Honda trails it through the quarter mile, too, which all makes sense given the Chevy's half-liter-displacement advantage. Stopping distances are similar: 136 feet for the Civic, 132 for the Cavalier, the latter with noticeable brake fade. Skidpad grip is identical at 0.78 g, though the Civic weaved through our slalom cones a significant 2 mph quicker. Honda wins the EPA ratings test by a budget-impacting 6-city/5-highway mpg and has four front airbags to the Cavalier's two.in terms of performance the cavalier was significantly better than the civic but in terms of looks yea the civic takes it but in a race your not gonna look very good in 2nd place either way if someone offered me the choice between a 2004 civic or cavalier ill take the honda killer everyday and that 2mp slalom gain would be defeated with a simple eibach springs step 1 springs kit so just like tony hawk the honda is very skilled but entirely overated i smoke civics all day

Since this thread is back, might as well say why GM canceled the fiero. When the 90 pre-production car was tested, it was the fastest car GM had. It beat the vette in all categories, for a fraction of the price. That wasn't allowed, so they axed the fiero. Shame too, I liked that car.

I got to agree with John on this. the Cavalier was one of GM's best selling cars of all time. yes, it had a bad rep amongst the kiddie ricer crowd who watched entirely too much Fast and the Furious. but anyone with a maturity level above high school and a small budget, those ppl ate this car up. the only ppl I know who owned these cars but didn't like them were KIDS with an ego problem and no skill in maintaining them. all the adults I know, like the receptionist as work now, loves them. she loves my black one especially bc I put time and money into it.. she says it's "cute" lol

the way I see it, GM can't go wrong rebadging a car in the future as a Cavalier. it was obviously popular, given the sales it's had. and it does have a cult-like following.. or at least did in it's heyday. @!#$, what they need to do it release a 2-door, RWD to compete with the FR niche.. use the same drivetrain as the Solstice/SKY, or maybe even a V6 version of it if they wanted to throw down with the IS250/IS350 crowd (or the like). give it a sleek, coupe body.. maybe even a fastback style, modern-day head and taillights, slap on a Cavalier badge.. Cavalier SS in top trim, and I think you'd have a good seller if it was priced right. give it some time, and you'll probably hear @!#$ like, "the Cavalier? I remember that little thing.." or "I always wondered whatever happened to those". it'd likely drudge up nostalgia like the Chevette and Fiero does now. or like the whole Pontiac brand will in a few yrs

right, everyone who thinks about cavaliers remember it for it's spectacular performance. oh wait.

it was a cheap, economical car, not a race car. most people who owned them did so to get 25-30 mpg, a big enough trunk to fit groceries, enough passenger space for their family and a quite reliable engine (with the exception of the 2.4l water pump issue). in 1995, it was actually a quite good looking little car too, which was a bonus. however, that didn't really change much over the next 10 years. whereas the civic was being updated and changed every few years with a new, better version coming out, we got new headlights and bumpers. sure, j-bodies responded well to modifications, but so did the civic. so that's not really a fair comparison saying "just swap out the suspension and it'll be better", because that's not a fair test anymore. hell, swap out the motor for a turbocharged viper motor and it'll really kick the civic's ass. yes, that's a bit extreme, but you can't just go swapping out bits of one for something better, so stock for stock, the civic still wins that category. besides, 90% of people who bought j's didn't even know how to change their own oil anyway, so performance mods weren't on their minds (we crazy few people on this forum are a mad breed though).

so it's not exactly that people who bought j's had any of that in mind when they bought them, they simply bought them to "buy american". afterall, what other options did they have at the time? escort, neon and that's it really for the american market. the people who bought foreign obviously went with honda for the same reason people bought j's: brand/nationality loyalty. not performance, which really is for all intents and purposes, pretty much the exact same.

I dont think they will, but if GM ever rebadged another car as a Cavalier/Sunfire Id buy it, just out of the love for the name. Ive owned a few J's and Ive always loved my J bodies. If Gm ever decides to bring it back, I think alot of us would be happy. As long as it wasnt a total P.O.S.

Also, if they had a "performance" model, keep it as a Z24, not an SS. Just my opinion

I can't see GM ever bringing back the Cavalier name, for one main reason, the name "cavalier" brings the word "junk" to a lot of peoples minds, personally i think they're great cars for the money, but a lot of people see them as complete junk... which brings this up, why would GM want to bring back a name that the general public saw a being a piece of crap? Even the Cobalt got a bad name fast because like mentioned above, it's essentially the 4th Gen cavalier.

^-- WTF!?! That's not a J!
