IDI paint questions.
Monday, May 20, 2013 7:13 PM
I am not entirely sure where I should have posted this, so please move it if need be.

I am going to be painting my IDI cover (white with red lettering) and wanted to know how long the cover should be left off of the car after painting? Also, is there some sort of brush on paint that I could use for the lettering that would be fine in an engine bay? Masking off everything but those small areas would be a huge PITA. I am going to be clear coating it if that helps at all.

Ensure you use a high-heat paint and then just read the directions on it. The can should tell you how long it needs to set.

Don't do it man, just get a spare and prep n spray so you can let it air 24 hrs after painting. Then you can switch em and redo the second as a spare in a diferent color

I would track down a spare, and paint that so you can take your time, and let it cure.

Also, can you post a pic of the side of your car. I would like to see the white rims against the aqua marine.

Thanks for the input guys, I just hope I can find one in good shape at the junkyard. Does it absolutely have to come off of a cavy or can it come from multiple different vehicles?

And as far as the pictures go I will post some later when I get home cuz my phone is being lame.

I really like the way they look, but I am hoping to get a new set of stockies pretty soon. If you look closely the rear driver side wheel has a huge chunk missing, I honestly have no clue how it is holding air. It has been like that for a few months...

Find one on any cavalier, sunfire, grand am, or alero with a 2.4. Or you can get a 2.3 ho cover if you'd like

Have a nice day.

I know you mentioned painting it two different colours... but it's probably much easier to paint and polish it like I did mine.

Start by sanding and buffing the raised areas until they're gleaming. Then paint. Then sand the paint off the raised areas. This is after 8 years or so... but it wouldn't take me more than half an hour with a polisher to have it gleaming again.

The problem is that the polished look isn't for me, I think the white and red will look really good in my car. As far as difficulty goes, I really want to take my time and do it the way I want it, ya know?

get a dremel with a few sanding rolls etc for the inner part. the idi is easy to come by, most of us have a few stashed away. make sure to bring the paint to the back side to so it does not flake off easily.

I think the red is a bad choice for your car color.

You can tell it was my first time, but I am quite happy with it.

It ties in with the red bow ties and my interior.

Nice. I'd just about forgotten what the stock engine used to look like.

Note that you can paint the airbox to match as well.

Interesting idea, but I don't plan on having the stock airbox for very much longer.

Haha thanks. Yeah but a bottle of cleaner and the roll of shop towels I keep in the trunk should do the job.

I'm still not big on the red.

I really do not recommend painting the stock airbox.

I have never seen the white done before so it is different. I think with a few other touches it could be really nice.

Thank you, my next piece is gonna be a white intake with red elbows... Or maybe vise versa, still undecided.
