Your Input Requested and CONTEST: Password Recovery
Saturday, July 20, 2013 1:29 PM
This site having been around so long, I am seeing more and more people that have forgotten their password, and have an old email address in their profile. That means the 'lost password' page wouldn't work for them, because it sends an email to the address in their profile. While I can't do anything about that, except encourage people to update their profile on the site when their email changes, I can do something to allow those people to get back into the site. I am leaning towards the old standby that many other sites, particularly banks use, security questions. These are a list of questions that only the individual would know all the answers to.

Here's how you can help. I need a list of questions that would work well for this sort of thing. Think about it, what sorts of things can we ask that wouldn't be public knowledge, but are also things an individual wouldn't ever forget.

CONTEST - Everyone that posts a question that we end up using will be entered into a random drawing for free premium membership. Only the first person to post a particular question will be entered. The more questions you post that we end up using, the more entries you will have.

Thanks, and please, list away...

Can't you allow the user to create there own questions? A lot of site use that. Then you would see the questions they picked.

What year do you believe Peter Gabriel first Shocked the Monkey?

EDIT: Don't mind me... i think we have a good list of questions listed above... lol

A good question though would be: What was the first mod you ever considered doing to your car?

That is probably a terrible question for a car site. Particularly one where many people list at least their current car, but most times all cars they have ever owned, in their public profile.

That is not very secure. Although I suppose it is no worse then having no password policy, right? I wonder how many members' password is 'password'. Maybe I should consider instituting a password policy along with this change.

A good password to use is "Incorrect" that way if you get it wrong The system will actually tell you what your password is.

The best thing to use is a question where the answer won't change, and would be hard to look up or figure out. I got nuth'n
In reallity there isn't a security question that you can ask that someone close to you, or can be found out by reading a profile somewhere.

i am not very fond of security questions to begin with. i remember all of my passwords, but recently i tried logging in to pay a credit card bill, and even though i typed in my password correctly, it still asked me two security questions... and for the life of me, i couldn't remember what i had put for those answers. if someone can't remember their password, do you really expect them to remember their favorite hobby, or favorite food? </soapboxrant>

Wow! Can't believe this site is still going strong. I've not been on for years. Got my Fire with 50k, and now has 210k. Driven (beaten) daily.

Most sites just use Favorite pet, first pet, pet's name, favorite sports team.
