2002 Cavalier LS Sport: is this a good deal?
Tuesday, June 07, 2005 2:52 PM
So I plan on making a pilgrimage across the state to buy a 2002 Cavalier LS Sport tomorrow or the next day or the day after that at the very latest! It has 55,000 miles, manual transmission, and was a “smoker’s” car. I don’t particularly care for the smell but hell, I think it is a sweet deal for $6,000 (without tax/tag). Am I getting a deal?

I’m trying to think of questions to ask. I know it has a clean title and is coming off of the lot of a large Dodge dealership so it was probably a trade-in. I’ve already been to the place but didn’t test drive anything.

I called Mr. Car Dealer up today and said, “If I buy the car, you’ll teach me how to drive it home, right?” (I don’t know how to drive stick). He said, “If you buy the car, we’ll get you home.” *That’s funny…

Ok…when I go tomorrow, what kind of things should I pay particular attention too? I heard the dashboard has a tendency to split. Anything else?

Is there a particular mileage that the transmission should be renewed at for manual? I dunno…re-gritted or whatever they do?

I looked up the BlueBook value for trade-in and we’re talking about $4,500. Now assuming that is what they paid for it, what would be a good negotiating price, including taxes and tags? I was thinking $5800 taxes and tags included.

PS: If you are driving in the Pennsylvania region in the next few days and hear horns a-blaring, it is probably me staled out in an intersection…YEAH! Bye…

Offer then 5500 + tax / tag and see what they say . . . . . . you should be able to find the same year with a little less miles for the same price range and all . . . good luck . . .

, whatever you're asking, I don't think so. My stock tranny/clutch have 60,000 miles on them, both going strong, I'm sure someday down the road it'll need a clutch after countless amounts of abuse, but I'll worry about it then.

Do your soon-to-be car a favor though and find someone's beater to learn stick on!

yeah, I'd offer them 5500 and they pay tax/title...they should go for it...most will...tell 'em ur not coming all the way across the state unless it's a flat 5500

i have a 02 ls sport also with 30k miles on it. dealer would give me 6k for it and the car is spotless and still smells new. But that is trade in value though.

things to watch out for:
front suspension noises (after all the recalls/tsb's mine still makes noise)
make sure all the recall/tsb work has been done too.

i dunno , all depends on the car, some people have good luck with them some dont.

I would offer what karo said and see what happens.

good luck

I come home after crawling under it, over it, in it, checked out the engine, etc., lift the hood and think, “For the love of F’n F’n F’man, that 2200 sure as hell, better have 140 horses!

God is punishing me for not going to church these past few years, I know it.

“God why must you hate…why must you hate me so!”

DAMN…I just want to take my aggression out of something! I’d take it out on the car but I admit, it does LOOK sweet azz.

So it was NOT an ecotec? I thought ALL LS Sports Came with an Ecotec?

I DID pop the hood…it just never dawned on me because I assumed the LS Sport had the Ecotec in it…after all, I believe it is standard. I just came back from hauling azz around the back roads and let me tell you, this car has jack-@!#$ski for power. I love this nightmare…

Maybe I can put a “For sale $7,000” in the window and some dumbazz will make me an offer.

That stick is fun to drive though...

I laid a patch out of the driveway because I had the parking brake on

did the dealer advertise it as an ls sport? if so, you can sue them for false advertisement, and get your money back

other than that, it may just be an LS model w/ the sport appearance package. i know mine is a base model, but i wanted to shell the few dollars for the appearance package on it- looks much better.

but yeah, what did they advertise it as?

On their website, they just have it advertised as a Cavalier…yeah, I’m screwed. My mind thought was if it looks like a duck, well it must be a duck. Couldn’t tell if it walked like a duct given I couldn’t floor it with the salesman in the car…

Either way you look at it, they made a honest sale and I just didn’t catch what I was actually buying.

Anyone want to pay me for it? It has some really cool ricer decals on the side you won’t find anywhere else. That’s at least $500 right there…

I think I’ll keep it now, unless someone wants to buy it now, and then try to sell it in late fall.

I should get pictures up...

Fact:

ALL 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier LS Sports came with the 2.2L Ecotec in it.

That's right, all of them. This is why they made the model "LS Sport".

The Z24 (in 2002) had the 2.4 LD9 engine.

And the base model and LS models had the 2200 (the LS did have the LD9 as an option, but was standard with the 2200).

And this is strictly US Sales, Canada has never had the LS Sport model, and never had the Ecotec in the Cavaliers in 2002.

I dont know about where you are....but here in Oklahoma we have thirty days after the sale to return the car for any reason. I think its a "Lemon Law" or some such. Why be shackled with a payment/car you don't want? There are plenty of cavaliers around , even the LS Sport models , patience is not just the name of that stripper my wife and I had last night - some say it's a virtue.

actually i think your wrong bout Canada not having the Ecotec in 2002.. There is a black 2002 Z24 for sale right now where i bought my car from and it has the Ecotec, saw it and drove it.. even tho it was 5spd i still like my LD9 better... And there is another one i saw awhile ago with the Eco in a 02 Z24... And they wernt from the states ither, the one i drove was bought brand new at that dealership... just some heads up.. i could be nutz tho...
