Considering Picking Up a 2nd Vehicle...
Sunday, July 03, 2005 12:18 AM
There's a used car lot near my house that has a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier 5 Speed LS Sport in Ultra Silver Metallic that I'm considering buying. I checked out the car exteriorally (if that's a word) today and the car appears to be in magnificant shape. The only "mod" I can see is that the original owner removed the factory muffler with chrome tip and may have replaced it with a Cat-Back Exhaust or something, I'm not sure... I just know the muffler and (very wide rounded) tip looks nothing like the muffler and tip on my base Cavalier. Everything else is still stock right down to the radio. The floor still has plastic covering and looks like it has never seen a drop of dirt in its life. I'm not one for buying used cars but this looks like it could be a steal if it's in sound mechanical condition.

As I haven't been able to get inside of the car yet, I do not know the actual miles but considering how good of condition it is for being 2 -3 years old...I'm willing to venture it is less than the 50,600 that's on my car. My ideal situation would for me to pick up that car and to continue fine-tuning my manual driving skills (since I don't have a manual car that I can actively drive daily) while still using my Cavalier as a daily driver until I have it mastered then somehow selling my Cavalier and switching over to LS Sport 5 speed.

There's no price on the Cavalier and I just did some general research like typing in some basic information about the car on sites like KBB and so forth. I found the average price of that Cavalier to be about $10,735...this is not an actual figure...this is just my assumption. I used 30,000 miles as the estimated miles (since it's at least 2 years old and this is what I came up with). I'm going to go with the notion this used car lot is going to want at least $13,000 for it with them trying to sell me on the idea that it's a "sports car" in superb condition. My bestfriend got her 2000 Celica GT from this same place and they were trying to sell it to her for about $13,000, trying to use the Toyota name value for justification on the pricing before agreeing to sell it for a little over $10,000. I definitely don't want to pay that much for a used car, especially a Cavalier when I can get a brand new LS Sport 5 speed (that's less than a half hour away from my house) for under $16,000 ($15,255.16 to be exact). So I'm wondering what would a reasonable price for me to offer on this car? I'm thinking anywhere between $7500 - $9000 because that's what I can swing in my budget. Is that too low of a price for me to ask on this Cavalier?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions anyone can give and sorry for making this long and drawn out as I usually do with my other posts

From a dealership it will be hard to get it at a cheap price. They will want to charge you way more then its worth. But i have seen people in the classifieds selling 03s and up for aroundyour price range. You might want to look into buying it from a private seller.

working on sig.... just wait

Car dealers put this wrap down to keep the floor cleaned after they detail it

True, my Cavalier and Accent both came from the dealership with plastic covering on the floors, followed by the floor mats, but this place isn't a name brand car dealership that also sells used cars. This is (more or less) a Mom & Pop (actually it's a family owned business) used car lot of less than 20 vehicles. I looked through a few cars while I was there and it was the only car to have that plastic covering on floor. It was just my point that the original owner never took that plastic off the floor which kep the interior floor really clean.
