JBO site problem, pic of it
Wednesday, August 03, 2005 10:27 AM
When I click to see the list of threads in a given forum, there's a bunch at the bottom that appear to have been read, but I know I didn't read many of them. The little white paper to the left of the title doesn't have the exclamation point in it, the thread title is the color of a used link... but I know for sure I didn't use it.

Here's a screen shot. I attempted to imageshack thumbnail it, but it kept squishing when it was clicked on. Here it is slightly chopped & compressed a bit...

This has been going on around 1 full week. It happens when I log in at work too, where I know I don't read many at all & most of the threads will appear read.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. It could be the cut-off of new posts since the last time you looked at the forum....if that makes since lol I don't know.

Heh.. I thought it was just me.... I installed some new software and I thought I'd broken something.

Ok, it's happened to me in the past couple of days too.

I've had the same thing. I was kind of wondering if it might have been work checking up on me.

CONGRATULATIONS!

I was wondering how long it would take people to notice the changes I've made...

First off, read/unread posts are no longer tracked via cookies, the way they have been in the past. They are now tracked by the server. The benefits of this are many - no more strange periodic errors when accessing the site (this only affected a small number of people, but the solution was always to delete the cookies). Because it is tracked on the server, from any computer at any location that you use to log in to the site, it will remember what you have read. This is great for those that access the site from work and home.

The flip side of this, when you are not logged in, read/unread posts are NOT TRACKED! They all show up as read when you are not logged in. I had to do this, because there is no way to know who you are, and hence who to track it under, when you aren't logged in.

Adding to that, its now easier to see what you have read (or marked as read) and what you haven't. Unread posts are marked with a red "New", a red ! in the icon on the left, and it is LIGHT BLUE in color. Read posts are now all dark blue in color.

The "Mark All Read" button now works as it should. Perhaps the reason you were confused as to why those posts that you hadn't read appeared as if you did, is you clicked the Mark All Read button.

Oh I almost forgot. I made this change at the beginning of last week. That is where the "I was wondering how long it would take people to notice the changes I've made" line came from.

i don't know dave, it still seems screwed up to me. Every time i come on here everything is Red in color and no "!" marks. If I refresh then they go to the blue with the "!" mark. if i click on a topic and go back to the forum, nuthing has changed, still all blue. If i exit the internet and come back in to the org. everything is back to red. I havn't been able to see which ones i have visited for a week now, mostly in the Photots/Media forum. I am also logged in all the time so i dunno. Might just be me not used to it but personally it was better and easier before, unless i do still have a problem, ???

keep in mind for multi-page posts, you have to read every page for it to be considered read. Either that or you use the 'Mark All Read' button.

As for going back to the forum, are you using your BACK button? If so then of course nothing has changed.

i think something else is screwed up because when i clicked this link just now it still shows as not read, and i've posted in it & read it. and all posts in photos & media and AG still show up as read and I have not clicked mark all as read, and there are plenty of posts I have read that don't show read, even after closing my browser & logging in again

^^^^^ thats not right

the adbot did it blame it on him !!!

Ok, those of you that are having some problems still, I think I found a little problem that stemmed from a bug that I caught within an hour or so of the code being live. If you were browsing during that time, you might have this problem. In any forum that new posts are not showing up correctly, or perhaps no new posts show up at all, click the MARK ALL READ button, and from that point on, it should keep track of new posts correctly.

Sorry for the trouble. Chalk it up to not enough testing before putting it live.

It only happens for me in the Newbies forum, everything comes up like it's already been read.

yea its the adbot doing it... hes to worried about money to care about our little issue with this....

Re: JBO site problem, pic of it

it's not adbot that's causing this. get over it. it's a new server side post/reply indicator, showing that there are new replies and new threads without having to rely on cookies on each individual members' computers.

click the "mark all read" button at the top of the forum and it will fix it.

I also have no "older posts" button. I can only look at one page of threads.
