I was just wondering if someone could tell me how to figure out what year an engine is, is there a # on it that you can tell or somethin like that.

there is no car or vin to help me.

the engine should have a vin stamped on it somewhere. find it and you can figure out what year it is from

I was hopeing there was but there are a lot of # all over the engine was hopeing someone could tell me where abouts and maybe how many in the sequance.

and what you do when you find the #'s.

I'm told it is a 99 2.2L from a sunfire but i just want to be sure of the year


oh and john we still need to hook up I still got that piston sitting here from your old 2.4l

Here is a couple of picks of the engine that i'm looking for a year on i am told it is a 99 2.2L but with the intake manafold and the t.b it looks to me pre 98 your thoughts on it please if you guys can tell.

judging by the ribbed rocker arm/valve cover, and the intake manifold/throttlebody, its an older 2.2.

yeah thats a 96-97 engine. the newer ones were 2200 has smooth valve covers different intakes and top feed injectors not side feed

yea i have a 98 2.2 and it doesnt have the ribs on the valve cover plus i thought those tb only came on the 95-96 2.2?

through 97... 98 was the transition year

yea i know the 98-99 2.2 are different then the pre 98s but i thought that tb only came out on the 95s and possibly the 96s? i could be wrong since i dont know much about engines.

well... ive owned 95-08 2.2's... its definitely pre 98... my s10s got the smooth valve cover and my 97 doesnt...but i thought the tb's on the 95-97 were the same... i cant picture what my 95 or 96 tb looked like!...

thats a 95-97 2.2 98 and up are 2200 with the plastic intake tube

So I'm trying to figure out where the coils are mounted on the 97 2.2L if any one has a pic to show that would be great.

They go on the back side of the block above/near the oil filter. You should be able to find a couple holes where the ICM mounts to.

Thank-you for the info but if someone could post a pick if they could find one that would be great I still cant picture where it goes
