Power Window Trouble

Hey guys, my '99 Z24 convertible is having several issues, but the latest is one involving the drivers side power window. The window was working great today until I pulled into the driveway. It went down , no problem, but would only go up about a 1/2"-1" and then stop. If I shut off the car, waited a minute and then turned it on, it'd go up another 1/2"-1". I did this until it was all the way up. Window has no issues going down.

The car only has 36K miles, but the graphics are worn on the switch, so I'm sure it's had some use. Anyways, any comments , especially with experience, are welcome. Thanks!

Maybe you have to clean the contacts. I want to do this to mine because mine does the same thing but it's maybe 1-2 a month. There is a thread I think stacked on how to take them apart and clean them. I did the same thing on my fiero and it was a night and day difference in speed too.

On the inside my car looks like a fighter jet.

It sounds like your power window motor is failing and needs to be replaced. The motor gets weaker with age (as the brushes wear out). A failing power window motor can usually lower the window but not raise it. When the power window motor fails, it will typically raise the window and then stop. If you wait a minute, you can raise it up some more but then it may stop again. You may have to do this several times. (You don't need to turn on or off the car or anything.) Or you can help the window up by pulling it up as you push the button. If you want to replace the power window motor yourself, following is a link to my instructions on how to do it. I recommend that you read through the comments section also, where I posted a link to some helpful pictures and slightly revised instructions.

If it's your driver's side, and your driver's side doesn't quite seal properly-- especially at the top-rear corner of the window, then if you're in there replacing the power window motor, you may want to implement this fix to make your window seal properly.

The problem is not likely your switch because when the switch fails, it just fails. But if here are my instructions on dealing with the switch.

And since at some point your convertible top motors will fail, you may want to make a note of these instructions on how to replace those.

Great Info, thanks Razz! Luckily, went out the following morning and the window works fine, though I do have the issue where it seems to go higher than it should, and away from the mating seal on the rear window. Will do that fix when I put new speakers in.

Unfortunately, another problem reared it's head. I carefully washed the car, making sure not to get the top overly soaked, even though I siliconed it. Now ALL of my dash warning lights are on , and will not go out. Oil, Coolant, Theft, etc. WTH? Even the odometer is acting all screwy. Bought the car because of the low mileage, but beginning to think it had low mileage for a reason.

When the power window motor starts to fail, it may actually work for a day or two here or there, but it usually gets worse and worse.

I have no idea what's going on with your dash lights. You should probably start a separate thread on that if you haven't already. Did you put on OBDII reader on it to see if it's throwing any error codes?
