Quick tranny question
Wednesday, February 23, 2005 2:10 PM
I just got a 2003 Cavalier, and I don't know much about the 5 speed and what causes what...My question is to day on my way home from work I noticed I had to put the clutch pedal all the way to the floor to get it to shift(kinda felt spongy) and the gears were VERY hard to get into...well halfway through my 17 mile trip it all went back to feeling like it should. I've only put 300 miles on this car so far and it now has 22132 miles on it...just kinda would like to know if its something common or if I should take it in to have the dealership look at it. Thanks

Kinda sounds like you lost fluid pressure temporarily and then regained it again. This happens to me in my older '96 Isuzu trany because I have a big leak somewhere. Air gets in the clutch line when the fluid leaks out, even when I refill it - the clutch will still be loose until the air is displaced and I have a brief period of normality again.

Check the clutch fluid - see if your low. You may want to wait to see if this problem happens again - the previous owner could have had some work done before selling the car and not all the air got out of the line. Look under your car and see if you can find a small amount of brake fluid leaking from the bottom of your transfer case. In my generation of car it was common to have clutch fluid leaking problems that no one bothered to fix - they just kept adding fluid because of the cost of replacing the leaking slave cylinder.

The clutch fluid reservoir is full...but I also checked it after it started working again. I guess I'll just wait and see if it happens again and if it does It'll go right back to the dealership. Thanks
