Brakes are cheap and easy to replace.
Clutch is more expensive and harder to replace.

If you can perfectly rev-match go ahead and down-shift.

I don't agree or disagree with any methods. I downshift and break when driving my car fast and hard. I put it in neutral and brake when I am cruising around.

unless your stopping fast, then you are using your brake pads to slow down your engine too. or at least it feels like it to me.
