Oil Plug Pics :(

First time I've changed my oil while being in possession of a digital camera..
Any ideas/suggestions of what I can do to reduce this or ... fix it? Oil smells slightly like burnt gas too.

On to the oversized pics which aren't too pretty

Before wiping off the oil...

After dabbing off the oil...

What it leaves behind...

Have you used Sea foam before? I ran some in my crank case and a few days later when i changed the oil, i had some nice carbon particles floating around after i dumped the pan to take it to recycle. Might be something like that if you have.

Here's what I would do to get rid of some of the crap:

- Drain old oil
- Leave oil filter on
- Fill up with the cheapest oil you can find (Walmart )
- Drive around the block like a mad man for 10 min or high idle for 20 min
- Drain the new oil
- Change the filter
- Fill up with new oil

I did this on my mom's MX-3, worked like a charm.

Hmm interesting idea.. might try it..

Sea foam.. nope never heard of it/used it.

I guess I should include some info about what I'm using... the car's a 99 Z24.. just under 90,000 kms or 56,000 miles.. it's not an old engine..
Also I'm using Mobil1 5w30 synthetic oil.. been using it for over a year now..

Those are metal shavings. Change you oil and filter on the proper schedule. Sea foam and stuff is not going to get rid of it.

the oil and filter get changed before every 5000kms... however it sometimes goes over 3 months but no more than 5 months ever.

Sea foam is used to clear off carbon/gunk deposits.

this weekend i replaced the valve cover gasket on my 00' cav. while the cover was off it looked like someone had burnt oil inside . it was gunked up and flaky and nasty as hell. is that what the sea foam is used for? what kind of reasons lead a person to feel that they need to use this stuff also?

people used to use kerosene to clean it out, but i'm not telling you to do that. It could cause severe engine damage/fire if it isnt' done right.

my car hasn't done that on mobil one

Have you guys ever heard of a product called Auto-RX? It's supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread for cleaning out engines.

use kerosene. change oil, new filter, cheapo oil, run a can of kerosene with the engine hot for about 30 mins (normal street drive), change the oil/filter again. indide of your engine will be like new. However, if your engine is buring ANY oil, this can (or for that matter, ANY engine flush) be a bad idea. if will clean off the seals and allow more oil into the combustion chambers.

Wow, I almost want to try that, but kerosene/engine, never heard of it.

I run synthetic now, but a good cleaning always helps.

I dont know why everyone is telling you do go about cleaning your engine with all the substitutes, that dirt which is actually very fine metal particles is very common on engines under 70k miles. Especially if the engine wasn't broken in properly, as alot of it is burr's and casting frays in the metal, and just break-in wear. The magnet is there to trap all those particles on your plug so they dont recirculate throughout your lubrication system. Just keep taking care of your car and changing the oil regularly. Just think of it this way, all those metallic parts in your engine are going to wear in some way or another, thats basically what you are seeing.

Exactly what my oil plug looked like last week when I changed my oil. I have never paid attention until now. I will be looking closely at the next oil change to see if there are new shavings.

They also make magnets that you put on your oil filter. It helps keep the metal shavings in the filter. Not sure if they work or not but i've heard good things about them.

Well being a mechanic that little bit of metal on the end of the plug is prettymuch normal, i dont think their is a car that comes into the shop without that at oilchange time! clean the plug off, put new oil/filter in and drive it. nothing to worry about.

If metal shavings are the big thing to worry about and your still not satisfied with the results you can always place a bigger magnet down close to the drain plug. It will help in securing the particles which are "floating" around. Filtration is another big thing, and will people like me who use Redline Oil or Mobil 1 theres no point paying good money for a good quality oil and then filtering it with a 2.00$ filter. Kinda defeats the surpose. If "flushing" is what you desire, it can be done...but without the possible harmful effects of some of the oil flushing additives out there. Remember K & W makes a pint or a quart that they sell @ autozone??---Well, relatively all it is is diesel fuel. You dump it in and let idle for a few...and then you drain. Decent idea...but not the safest on seals which if damaged cause leaks...which in turn is worse then having those few particles there. This next idea works because a) I've done it and 2) its theory is intact.
Suppose you have a 4 qt oil capacity.....drain the oil like you always do....make sure engine temp is up so that the oil will flow better out,(give it sometime to really drain like at least 30 minutes) If you still worried about trying to get all out that you can, either remove the oil pan all together or just run some pressured air down to assist the runout of the oil. Once this is complete...for the only time in synthetic oil history...use a cheap filter because it aint gonna be there long. What you are going to do is purchase the 4 qts of mobil 1 0w-20 weight. Dump it in..check for leaks and allow it to run for 15-25 minutes at idle. Because of its extremely low weight and because at its highest it will only achieve a 20w....this will be really watery and will grab most of that w/o a problem. WARNING....if you not a synthetic oil user and haven't used it and have high mileage on the car you can do something similiar.....if you are running a petro 10-40 and it has good compression......jump down to a 10-30 or a 5-30 synthetic blend like valvoline dura blend or mobil synthetic blend high mileage. If a 10-30 jump down to a 5-30. Best of luck

I work in a shop doing 50-60 oil changes a day or more, and every single car that has come in to the shop (mostly GM's) that have the magnetic oil plug have had metal shavings attached to the end of it. An engine works with metal to metal contact. It's inevidable. The oil you use is there to reduce some of the friction and dissapate heat but it cant completely stop metal to metal contact. Its that metat to metal contact that makes those shavings and there isn't a single oil or engine treatment out there that can prevent it. I would say what you have on your oil plug is perfectly normal so i hope that helps calm you down a little bit.
