Knocking
Monday, February 28, 2005 8:06 AM
My fiances 2000 Z24 has started knocking from the bottom of the motor. What could the problem be? How much to fix it if I did it my self? Also could i swap a 99 Z24 motor in to her car?

is it a loud knock regardless of engine speed, or is it a knock at idle which dissappears with a little gas off idle.

also is it a random knock, or is there a pattern to it...

you really can't hear it when just idling. when driving or revving it a little you can really hear it. it has a definite pattern to it.

if froms teh bottom of the motor, check for a dent in ur oil pan, might be the crank knocking against it

Ok, well if it is not pronounced when idling, but gets really loud when on the gas, almost like someone is hitting the engine with a hammer, you may have spun a rod bearing. I would not drive it anymore until you confirm this. If you continue to drive it, you will render the crank useless, and possibly throw the rod through the block.

She may have run the oil a little too low. The 2.4 will spin bearings left and right in the bottom end if the oil gets a little low.

Thanks I am gonna tear the motor apart this weekend to see what it is. Just hope it will not cost a fortune to fix.

if you catch it fast enough before it screws the crank its a fairly easy fix... put new bearings in and go prettymuch, if its scored the crank then their will be no such luck..

he means maybe something dented the oil pan in and now the rod is hittin on it, which would be possible i suppose but very unlikely

oh. That makes a little more sense...but I think that the oil pan has to move so far to even get close to the crank, it would break first. AND with the balance shafts down there, it is unlikely that would occur.

Not to mention an Aluminum pan would most likely crack to hell before it dented .. and there is in no way that the rod would hit the pan, the balance shafts cover all of 2-4 rods and 3/4 of #1.

I would stick with the rod bearing being bad .. how many miles ? keep regular maint. on the engine ?

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.

My Car has the same problem it sounds like, my 97 Z24 has a slight knock @ an idol
and gets progressive louder and faster as i drive. The Oil was down a quart, i just changed it today and the noise is still there. I was told that it could be a rod bearing as well.

Any recommendations anyone?

How about anyone know what it is when you get a random knock with no real pattern? It occurs only at idle, and off idle and during acceleration/cruising it is not there? It kind of makes a rattle sound as you hit the gas, but then immediately silences...almost like there is play somewhere...Could that be a main bearing?

It is happening in my buddies 2.4L and I really can't figure out what it could be since I know it is not a rod bearing. It has been doing it for about 6-8 months and has not gotten any better or worse.

he said it occurred less frequently and less intense when he switched to synthetic oil.

That is EXACTLY what mine is doing, im in the same pickle as ur buddy, if u find out what it is, do u think you could help a fellow out and e-mail and let me know what the deal is, i thought it was a rod bearing, but if u say its not, mine probably isn't either because my car is doing EXACTLY what u said ur friends is doing

my e-mail address is twatson__420@hotmail.com

e-mail me if u find anything out, because im @ a loss
and it seems to me that u may be as well, but if i find anything out i'll let u know either thru e-mail if u e-mail me or via this forum

Thank Dawg

I dont know what it could be...sounds like there is a little end play in the crank, or maybe in the balance shafts themselves...That type of thing does not sound like a rod bearing, because rod bearings knock all the time, and the engine will quit rather quickly after it starts knocking.

I am thinking I will be tearing the motor apart to inspect it to find out, but that will not be until later this spring when we get another motor for his car.

I am hoping someone on here has an idea.
