this might be a stupid question but how do you check the tranny fluid on a 2000 sunfire or cav??

I guess you are talking about the automatic without a dipstick.
If so, beside the right hand(pass.)side axle seal,there is a 10 mm bolt.Remove it and start the engine.Add fluid until it starts pouring out.Reinstall the bolt before shutting the engine off.
Don't ask me why they built it this way.

Better start the engine before you remove the check plug, or you will have a gusher.
