inner tie rod -- i need everyones help
Friday, April 01, 2005 2:18 PM
i bent the inner tie rod hitting the side of a mountain and need to know how it comes off. It appears to press fitted onto the shaft that goes into the rack and pinion. Any GM techs or mechanics that may have a blown apart diagram, that would really be appreciated. Furthermore, i went through my uncle's shops database. There was no specifics on the car, however, it said that some cars need the rack and pinion removed. Does anyone know why. I can easily get to it, however, I'm not sure how to take it off. I do have access to a "puller" set, including everything from pulling the ball joints apart to pulling the harmonic balancer off the engine.

Please do not ask how I hit the side of mountain...

you need a special tool to remove it. You have to remove the other then the boot and you will see the what I'm talking about. Most auto stores should have this tool or a loaner and can tell you how to use it.

it should twist off the rack with a inner tie rod tool. I have never seen a GM rack with a pressed on inner, but I could be wrong.

I got it. You have to cut where they hydralically pressed it together and then it spins off...thanks everyone for the help.
