does the axle just slide out of the differential, or is it bolted in? 96 cavalier 2.2 5 speed

There is a clip inside the differential that holds it in there, but you can just pull the axle out. Pull on the metal part at the tranny, not on the axle, or the other end. If you pull on the end or the axle itself, you will ruin the inner CV joint.

um...what are you confused about.

There are two ends of the axle, the axle shaft, and the two CV joints. Where the Inner end connects to the tranny, that is where you pull. Do not pull on the axle shaft or the outer end as it will stress the inner CV and ruin it.

no bolts, just pull, or tap it out gently.

is the clip actually in the tranny? I dont understand if its held in by a clip, you can still pull the axle out?

There is a C-clip on the axle that locks it into the differential. It will release when you pull on the axle and come out. It will still be on the axle so you can just snap it back into the tranny when you are ready to.

The oil will leak when you take out the axles, so you should drain it first, or get a big cat pan.
