engine ticking/knocking

Hey this is the first time i talked in the j-body.org org, actually first forum i ever talked on any forum lol, but i read this site daily and its the best j-body site i found since i bought my 99 sunfire gt. But now for the question, my friend picked me up with my car the night before, and i heard i pretty loud ticking so i pulled over immediatly checked the oil, it was very low, just barely reading on the dip stick, so i filled the oil up and it didnt make a difference at all, and the ticking speeds up with the rpms.... but the car doesnt feel laggy or anything, still performs great and after 2500 rpms you cant hear it no more, im thinking its the timeing belt or tensioner but not too sure, if anyone can help that would be great...

at first read, i would say spun bearing...but not so sure upon reading the rest.

your car uses the same engine as mine did; 2.4L LD9. These engines have a knack for spinning rod bearings (particularly the pre-2000 ones).

When mine went, it would knock over like 3k. It still performed OK but oil was real low and black. When I filled it up, nothing changed. Stupid me decided that "if something was going to blow, let it blow". So, i did some very aggressive driving and next thing I knew it was knocking bad all the time. I pulled over, shut it off, called a towtruck and 3 weeks and $1800 later I had a motor from a '01 Grand AM with 30k on it. My motor had 120k at time of death. It would still start and drive but the knocking was VERY loud.

if you have no idea what parts are conected with all this, and inparticular what they do... just take it to a shop... get it correctly diagnosed, then go from there, weather it is shot, and would just be cheaper to get a motor from a totaled car, or if it is easily repaired....

^^^^^^^ agreed.....bettr if you know someone who can lookat it though. shops tend to tell you what their bank accounts want to hear.
