DRL's don't work
Monday, February 21, 2005 11:40 AM
When I put my car into gear (automatic) the DRL's don't come on. The little light on the instrument cluster flashes and the relay clicks for a bit. My passenger side high beam doesn't work but the drivers side does. My normal headlights work fine. I have checked all the headlight bulbs, and changed the relay. Any ideas as to what this may be?

The DRL indicator flashes to tell you something is wrong in the low beam circuitry. For instance, if a low beam lamp is out (which is what the DRL uses), the system is supposed to sense this and flash to tell you something is wrong with your headlights. Personally, if my DRL's went out, I'd be happy as long as everything else still worked. Did you get the high beam working? If not, that sounds like a good starting point.

drl's dont work on low beams, drl's work on highs or highs/lows at the same time, depending on the year of cavy. i would check the headlight bulbs first (pull them out, and look closely at the filament). if you passenger bulb is broke, thats whats causing the malfunction.

Have been having the same exact problem for about a year now. My DRL's do not work on my '97, but the low beams work just fine. One of my high beams is out and I don't know why.....

The relay was the first thing I replaced.

if the relay is blown or removed on 95-99 cavaliers, the DRLs will not work and only one highbeam will work. For some of us that hate DRLs but like to have highbeams, this is rectified by jumping the two pins that connect the two in the relay socket. For those that do want the functionality back, replacing the relay is the likely option.

i had a similar problem with a 99 sunfire...it turns out there was a broken wire/corroded wires in the harness right beside/under the battery..get a multimeter and a manual and start testing the headlight plugs..u will find the problem, i have faith!

Yep! Go with Dennis. Chances are it's a broken wire. Probably behind the left headlight or under the battery box. Proceed with patience. All that tape and loom can be time consuming. Good luck!

Like Dennis wrote, I'd check the plug underneath the battery tray. Mine was so badly corroded that I lost DRL's and both headlights eventually. I started as DRL's then one headlight, then both.
Its pretty expensive to replace at a dealership. Mine cost $1000. If I had to do it over again, I would buy the harness from them and do it myself over a weekend.

did you actually test the highbeams with brand new bulbs? sometimes the filament on the bulb looks just fine but still is broken. i had the same issue and my bulbs looked fine. bought some cheap walmart bulbs and all is good now. if its not the bulb, then its definitely a corroded wire somewhere.

Peace Out!!!

I've got the same exact problem!!! no drl's and passenger high beam out........i'm still getting voltage to the pass high beam but only 6.5 volts......i've checked the relay and it seems good.....i guess i'm gonna follow each wire and see if there's a short somewhere

Same problem here. No DRL's and pass. side high beam out. I'm gonna have to do some wire searching. Second time i've had to do this with the cav.

check the bulbs before you start tearing stuff up.
