Battery Warning Light on - Bad Alternator??
Thursday, April 07, 2005 5:07 PM
My battery warning light is on on the dash. I replaced the battery in hopes that it would fix the problem, I needed a yellow top anyways. It didnt fix the problem though. What are other things that could be causing the light to come on?

Could it be a bad alternator? Or something else?

Also does anyone know how many Amps the stock alternators put out and where I can buy an upgraded one? I will soon be running subs along with my air ride compressors.

Alternator. While the engine is running, disconnect the positive battery cable. If the engine stalls, it's the alternator.

Way to @!#$ up his electrical system. If you value your car or your life, do NOT do that. Just take it to an advance auto or auto zone and have them check the alternator, but I'm 99% sure that's your problem.

As for an "upgraded one", I'd need to know your year/make/model and engine size.

Thanks a lot guys. I knew when he posted to remove the positive wire it was a stupid idea. I wish people would only post if they were 100% sure what they were talking about, lucky for me I'm not a complete newbie.

Please only post if you know what youre talking about, or you could end up ruining someones car.

Anyways I got the alternator out, I ordered my new one. Its a 180 amp alternator for $180. Not bad at all, looks like it is very well built too. Thanks for your help guys.

Stock Alternators are 105 amp, arent they?

I'm running a yellow top with stock alternator and with lights, subs, and all that fun stuff i have never ever had a problem.
