10w30

i use 5w30 in the winter and then switch to 10w when the weather picks up, a friend of mine at a dealer says this is wrong. i'd like to make him feel like an a$$. i've also heard a few old wives tales that i'm curious about.

1) once you change your oil to synthetic, you can't go back to dino oil.

2) engines with excessive milage (100,000+) should use a heavier oil.

I use 10w30 in the summer time. If your engine is worn out then a heavier might help the oil pressure.
As far as synthetic why would you go back if you switched? When you move up to something better I would stick with it.
I have heard of some engines leaking oil because of going to synthetic but haven't heard that about the Cavalier having any problems.
So I can't say that you will convince your buddy that you are right but use what works for you.

You are not supposed to switch back, Im not saying you can't but you must flush the whole sysem before putting Dino back in, the sythentic oil leaves traces of chemicals on all your seals and bearing that will not mix very well with dino oil. I had a friend go from mobil1 5w30 full syn back to castrol 5w30 dino, his car ran like crap and starting knocking and pinging. He imediately switched back to Mobil1 syn and the noise were gone and the power was back.

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.

10w30 is actually for colder weather. Use 5w30 unless you live in a colder cliamte. It's what the engine was designed for.

You can go back once you switch to synthetic. It won't hurt anything.

there are so many mixed opinions about synthetic oil, its really impossible to say. some people ive talked to love it, my uncle has in his M3 and he only needs it changed every 15k. Some people, especially die-hard mechanics and restorers, say its a product of satan and only to use dinosaur juice. i dont see why there would be a problem switching back though.

I can't stand all this my friend's friend told me that synthetic will destroy your engine. blah blah blah. stfu and do some research.

You can switch back to dino after using synthetic. Hence syn blends.

10w30 is thicker than 5w30 when cold. The higher the number the thicker the oil!

W means Winter (aka cold) so 5 winter- 30

The Chevy dealership bought my car at actually uses 10w30 in everything they service (I'm sure there are exceptions, like the Vettes that use Mobil 1 synthetic from the factory, for example.)
