Stripped lug nut - HELP
Monday, April 18, 2005 11:52 AM
So last year I broke a few lug studs. No problem, my bro and I replaced them. Problem was, I got slightly longer studs than stock. At the time I didn't care because I had stock steelies on.

So heres a normal stock stud on my car:

Theres enough room to get the key in and turn.

Heres one of the longer studs we used:

Theres hardly any room to turn the key in there, and now it's stripped and won't turn at all. Any ideas on how to get this off?? Tire shops won't touch it because it may do damge to the rim.

Soon i'm gonna get proper sized studs and go with capped lug nuts, not these open ones.

You can try using some vice grips, but I think you best bet is to drill the lug nut out (get a bit just barely big enough to take the threads off).

You can also get kits with different size pieces that just barely fit over the outside of the bad lug nut and then you can twist it off. Just make sure that you use the right size or you can damage the rim. The tire place up the street from me tore up my rim but I am pretty sure they just beat a socket on there after I yelled at them. My friend has a set of the things you use to get off stripped lug nuts and they will not damage your rim if you use them properly.
