Hope for Getrag noise?
Tuesday, April 19, 2005 6:09 PM
Hey all,
I've been out of things for a while....but I just did a search and couldn't find anything related to updated info i found about the getrag rattle noise most of us deal with.

anyway, i came across GM's preliminary bulletin PI00314A . it references the original TSB 02-07-29-001 which did very little for any of us. it references this "wavy washer" fix. i can't imagine that i'm the first to find this since many of you are way more involved with things than me, but like i said...i tried searching both maintenance and tranny forums and couldn't find anything.

please post whether anyone has had luck with this fix! thanks
******preliminary bulletin****
Grinding / Rattle Type Noise from Manual Transmission M86 M94 - 5sp first fluid gear information lubrication plug second shift vibration #PI00314A - (05/28/2003)
Grinding/Rattle Type Noise from Manual Transmission M86 M94 - 5sp first fluid gear information lubrication plug rattle second shift vibration
.
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:
Repeat grinding or rattle type noise coming from the transmission after performing TSB 02-07-29-001. The noise usually occurs with the transmission in first or second gear at low RPM's and can be intermittent and should be greatly reduced after performing the bulletin procedure.

Recommendation/Instructions:
The diagnostic procedure for TSB 02-07-29-001 MUST be followed exactly.
If the noise characteristics match Noise #2 as described in the bulletin, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. This is a characteristic of the vehicle and can not be corrected.
If the noise characteristics match "Noise #1" as described in the bulletin after the overfill procedure has been performed, follow the procedure listed below for the installation of the wavy washers.
The noise in question is found in first and second gears while driving. However, the fix is implemented in the third and fourth gears.
1. Please refer to the published service information for the assembly and disassembly of the transmission. There are no other changes required for this installation.
2. Remove the input shaft followed by the third and fourth speed gears and respective blocker rings per the service information. Refer to DOC ID number 901674 of the 2003 Unit Repair Manual.
3. The wavy washers are installed between the blocker ring and the third speed gear and between the blocker ring and the fourth speed gear with the tabs on the washer snapping into the grooves at the base of the gear cone. The tabs on the washer MUST face the speed gear. Refer to DOC ID number 901676 of the 2003 Unit Repair Manual.
4. The blocker rings and gear sets are then re-assembled per the published service information.
Note: The Saturn fluid and overfill is not necessary once the wavy washers have been installed.
Parts and Labor operation information:
Part number: 12577493. Part number shown is the most current at the time of this information.
Part numbers are subject to change.
Quantity needed: 2
Labor Operation: K3161 3-4 synchronizer
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.

Would this be covered under the powertrain warranty?

i am not sure. i don't know what "PI" reports mean. whether they're treated the same as warranteed bulletin work or what. maybe someone can shed some light on that. how amazing would it be if GM finally figured out the very problem i discovered waaaaay back in june of '99 with my 2000, then jan of '02 with my 2002.

i guess i only have myself to blame. up until now it seems GM was never to blame....since it was "a characteristic of the vehicle and can not be corrected". but wait! isn't this at least the 3rd document that exists proving that they acknowledge it as a problem??

hmmmm....

PF!
Good to hear form you again. I see you're still hunting for the fix.

But I have sad news to tell you. I have the wavy washer installed I think I was the second at the time to get it installed in JBO.
Results:
It did not do anything, it did not even lower the noise at all. If anything, I am now riding around with more weight.
I'll save you the trouble and tell ya don't even bother.

In the GETRAG TRANNY NOISE thread, I think in the first 3 or 4 pages it shows my expiriance.

I am still looking to see if anything new has come out aswell other then the Saturn fluid or wavy washer.
If you see something good let us know.

Yeah I thought this "bulletin" was kinda old and that some people have had it done. There's basically no hope now I don't think. The car has been discontinued so I doubt they will dump any more money into trying to fix this problem. Best fix so far is using the B&M Synthetic trick shift and overfilling the tranny a bit. Fixed the noise on my car AND kept the shifting decent.

PF,
To my knowledge I don't remember any one else that had positive results out of this too.
Also I tried this around the end of December 2002-Jan 2003. Ya awhile.

I'm on a rebuilt tranny now (2nd rebuild in under 100,000kms), and it still has the tranny noise. I'll be changing back to the B&M soon though, even though it didn't stop the noise for me, it made the tranny shift smoother.

The shifter has absolutely nothing to do with the function of the tranny itself. All it does is move the rods to select the gears.

I was reffering to the B&M trickshift synthetic ATF, but I do also have the B&M short shifter, and it rocks!

Some one posted comment in the original Getrag thread, and they noted that they took their car to a trans shop and the guy said the noise was there because the engine(2200) didn't enough Horsepower to support this trans. The people that have ecotec engines have enough power to get rid of the "Slag" in the tranny not causing any noise at all. Thats the comment i remember about that. Im currious to know if it went away when you have a higher power setup?

Nope. I had the same noise in my '02 Ecotec. Saturn fluid did help but made it feel like I was shifting through concrete, especially in the winter. The B&M Synthetic Trickshift worked for me also.
