Hello everyone,
I hope this is the correct forum to post this, if not let me know where and I will move it there.
I was driving back from Las Vegas last weekend (to Minneapolis). In the middle of Utah my Check Engine light came on as I was going down a hill. Since I was about to hit a 110 mile stretch of freeway of nothing, I stopped in town and had it looked at.
The mechanic told me that the O2 sensor had turned the Check Engine light on. He told me that it was probably from giving the car hardly any gas while going down the hill. He turned the Check Engine light off and told me to keep going. He also told me the O2 Sensor sensed too lean of a mixture.
When I got into the mountains outside of Denver, the light came back on as I was going up a steep hill. The car performed normally the rest of the way home and is still performing normally. Today I bought and OBD II scanner (This thing is awsome!) to see why the Check Engine light was on. It came up with the code P1137, which according the OBD II software meant
"HO2S Bank 1 Sen 2 Lean System or Low Voltage".
What does this mean? Also can someone explain what too rich/ too lean means?
Like I said earlier, the car is still running normally, and the Check Engine light hasn't turned back on. Is there anything that could be going out soon or anything particular I should start watching for?
Thanks
Dave
It means you are either running lean or your o2 sensor is malfunctioning. It might be a good idea to inspect the fuel system(change the fuel filter, etc...). If that turns up nothing then try replacing that sensor. I believe its only like $12.
hmm, clear the ecu & see if the code returns in a week or so... maybe it was just a "hiccup"
low V.. mebbe do a visual inspection of that heated o2 sensor to see if the wires are intact.
running too lean= an increase in temp (i think) soo just check the temp gauge while you're driving... but that's on the extreme.
Hi Earl and Zach.
Thanks for the responses.
Where is the heated O2 sensor located? I have noticed that the temp guage will move up slighty (less than 1 tick mark) above normal when I am stopped. As soon as I start moving again, the temp gauge returns to normal. I just had the fuel filter replaced about 6000 miles or so, so I don't think that could be causing the problem. \
What about the fuel pump? I was told the car would hesitate when accelerating if that was going out. Right now the car seems to accelerate fine and response immediately when I push the accelerator. Are there any other signs of a dying fuel pump?
One more thing. I beleive that the sending unit for the fuel level is bad. I ran out of gas a few months ago, but my gas gauge still said I had about an 1/8 of a tank and no check gauges light came on. Now when I am at a 1/4 tank, and fill it, I put in about 11 gallons on a 14.3 gallon tank. Would that component have anything to do with this?
Thanks again guys.
on the 2.4s the o2 sensor is located on the header, then theres one on the cat converter. but i would check the one on the header first.
