A/C Fans still running with car turned off (no keys in)
Tuesday, October 09, 2007 11:26 AM
OK so I installed an RPM gauge in my a-pillar. Then I drive around, turn my car off and the fans up front are still running. The keys are in my hand, and the transmission is in gear (5 speed 2005 Sunfire). Seems crazy, so I back out and turn it off again. Still running.

Then I drive around, come back and it hasn't done it since. (About 6 start and stops and it's acting OK).

Should I be concerned? Any tips or guidance greatly appreciated.

when ignition switches start to fail that can be a symtom.. sometimes i have to jiggle the switch and it will stop

it will let you take out the key.. but there is still a circut connecting for the fan.. but not the stereo or anything else

If your engine is warm enough, the fan will stay on after you turn it off and take the key out to help cool the engine down a little. This is completely normal.

Most gm cars don't do that, I know that some Fords and some Chrlyser products do that. I know that my J body doesn't once the key is off so are the fans, regardless of the engine temp!

This is my 5 cents worth, (normally is would be 2 cents worth but I have adjusted it for inflation)

I can show you the PCM configuration screen that has the "Run time after key off" on it.

my 2002 Z24 did it with the 2.4 motor and PCM, and the 2.2 Eco motor and PCM I just put in.

What temps do your gauges read when this happens?

I live in arizona, and never had this happen. In 118F with the gauges reading warmer then usual with the car running and the fans on. Soon as I shut it off the fans go off.
Not doubting its not possible, I have just never seen this happen in this hot state..

Mines an 02, 2200. Maybe the 2200s are different, and obvously dont get as hot?

Thanks for all of the great advice!! Very much appreciated. I'm glad to hear that the majority thinks this is normal.
To answer some questions about the details: This happened in south Florida. My temp gauge was slightly above the mid point. Usually it's slightly below the mid point.

I guess I just over reacted. I just assumed they were "stuck" in the on position and would not turn off over time. Thanks again for the tips.

And another thing -- This is my 2nd J. My first was a 2200 Cavalier, never did this for 5 years +. This Sunfire I've had for 2.5 years and this is the first time.

My thoughts exactly. My '99 2.4 has NEVER done this either. I can sit in 5mph rush hour for 2 hours with the A/C on when it is 100 degrees out, pull into a gas station and turn the car off and no fan.

Are our fans connected to switched or unswitched 12v?

I think it depends, since some of them run after the car shuts off then it is a unswitched 12v, If it is like mine (doesn't run after the car is off) then it is a switched 12v.

on my 2002 ls sport, it happend to me. i got scared. i drove it for awhile and parked in a parking lot. didnt shut off right away. called my dad and asked. he said it was normal if a engine was kinda warm. idk what to say. seems like the ls sports do it.

Well I'm glad I decided to post this. Definitely scared me too. Kinda weird when your engine bay is going nuts after you take the keys out!

On my 93 2.2's:-

1. The fan motor is activated by Coolant Temperature-if Coolant Temp is above 109 deg C/228 deg F- E.C.M. switches Fan Relay ON

2. If the vehicle is equipped with Air Conditioning, a switch can activate the Cooling Fan Motor, when the Compressor is operating-IF A/C Head Pressure is 200 p.s.i. or greater-and Vehicle speed is less than 70 m.p.h.

3. The Cooling Fan Relay contacts are supplied (Always Hot) from Fusible Link C- Battery Positive at the Starter Solenoid junction.

4. There is a warning label on the Cooling Fan Shroud that the Fan may start at any time.

5.http://www.projectwyldfyre.com/ has cooling fan circuit diagrams, of later models, they all seem to be connected to an "Always Hot" +12 volts.

6. My 2.2's will/have had the fan ON with keys out until temp drops.

I have found that GM started programming the Ecotec powered cars to have the fan come on if the engine is a certain temp. My 01 Z24 has the programming to do it as well, but the settings were so high it would not. I have sense changed this with HPT. If you drive with your AC on your car will most likely not get hot enough for this to happen. I also just looked at a 97 Z24 tune. It has it in it as well, but 2 things have to be met A. 212 degree's engine temp, and B. 171 degree's IAT temp. With my 01 if both the A and B were not met it would not come on. So you can see how it would be hard. I'm sure on the Ecotec cars they have lowered those numbers, but I can't say 100%.
