California Wants GPS Tracking Device in Every Car
Tuesday, February 15, 2005 3:11 PM
"California has a new excuse for more taxes. Claiming losses due to fuel-efficient cars, such as Gasoline/Electric Hybrids, California is cooking-up a new system to punish people who aren't using enough gasoline. They want to tax commuters by the mile. How would this be accomplished? By requiring everyone to install a GPS device in their vehicle, and charge them their "taxes" every time they fuel-up. From the article: 'Drivers will get charged for how many miles they use the roads, and it's as simple as that.. [a] team at Oregon State University equipped a test car with a global positioning device to keep track of its mileage. Eventually, every car would need one.'"

And watch me be in court protesting the hell out of this issue. If they try, I'll spend every dime I have keeping it wrapped up in court so it doesn't pass.

F off It's the only thing that I spend my money on that's cheaper than when I was in MI.

I'd be out of this state faster than they could put one in my car. Even as F'ed up as cali is I highly doubt it'd ever pass.

no, the more of these BS laws we pass the more communist our society will become. Pretty soon, there's going to be laws prohibiting red cars to drive around on thursdays, blue cars on fridays, etc.

those people that use gasoline/electric hybrid cars are sacrificing a LOT of power, meaning their the people who basically commute from here to work and back. Usually, their not the safest drivers, but that doesn't mean we charge them more because they save gas. pretty soon they might say V8 engines+ prohibited to drive in certain areas. It's all a matter of the government trying to have more control over the people, which is fine, to a point.

Wow, now this is going to suck if this ever gets through. Considering I put 3000+ miles on my car every month

i dont see how it makes sense.

i mean in our CURRENT payroll taxes we are payign for road maintenance. and its obviously enough to keep the roads good. so this new idea would strictly be to prove %100 profit

if CA residents pass this damn thing i think ill jump off a cliff.

i'm with you, i put about 2500 on mine a month. and i got a lead foot too...

crappy part is, not only would we have the tax, but WE would probably have to pay an outrageous amount to get the device installed in our cars so we could be taxed.

THATS IT, I'M MOVING TO ARIZONA.

Its all BS... they jsut want to be able to track everyone, they do not need gps units in every car to charge tax per mile, they could just look at the odometer, bastards dont see a privacy issue here? ARGH!!! Time to move to Canada! wtf.. .this CANNOT go thru.. its one thing if you put GPS in your car, or if you buy it with it, but something else all together when the government wants to not only put a gps unit in your car, but this unit will obviously have wireless cellular data capabilities in order to upload location information..

way too much at risk here.. this cannot go thru.. They CANT use the argument that its about tax money there are 100 other ways they could get the money..

Nice Communist Republic we live in here.....

First off, if they ever do decide to put this device on your car, it would be a receive only device as far as the GPS portion is concerned. When you pull up to the gas station it probably will require you to plug it in... big scare on cell phones and wireless devices around pumps... and the only thing it will transmit will be the mileage you have traveled since your last fill. There are a few problems with this device though and it will NEVER see the light of day. Here they are...

1. The device is jamable, in other words you could jam it and it would not be able to calculate the distance you traveled.

2. Not everybody needs gas for traveling on the roads.. I.E. Off road vehicles. Filling a container. Like your car ran out of gas or your lawnmower needs gas.

3. Non-Californian vehicles. You can't equip them with the device just to enter your state.

4. Fake the mileage. People will come up with a way to tamper with the device and fake the mileage you travel.

There's more, but you get the point. There would just be too many problems with trying to do this. I think the most they can do is have people Volunteer to have this device put on there car to calculate there tax instead of paying the flat rate at the pump. That's my two cents.

Sorry to say that similar devices were introduced with OBDII in 95. Such . They can track your mileage along with various other things if they wanted to. They are just not allowed to use that information yet, due to privacy laws.
Yank the computer! Go standalone!

Thats why I said similar, but they are recording many variables that could theoretically be used against you. Just an FYI.

Sounds like I'm gonna have to start riding my "Lowrider" bicycle to work. Sure I'll be tired as H**lwhen I get to work but at least the only fuel I used would be Gatorade. And as crazy as California laws are and with that republican actor behind the desk it would'nt surprise if sooner or later this actually becomes a new policy.
