On engine swaps the engine must be of same year or newer and have been originally offered as an option in that particular vehicle in the year in which it was made. 2002 can swap for eco but not <2001. Also crate engines without vin numbers are not legal either.

My car is a daily driver, but I want to be able to give her a little more umph. I got my arse handed to me by a freakin Nissan Quest.......then the next night....a Honda Odyssey! How embarrasing is that! Anyways, any help would be great. I know turbo, NAWZ, etc is all illegal, but my intake header and exhuast are all legal and I want to keep the rest of my performance mods legal. What am I still able to do to my car?

You need to decide what you really want to do. You having a lot of weight in stereo equipment and dynamat in your car, and that means you're heading the wrong direction if you're trying to go fast.

You don't have a throttle body that I see.. pulleys and like they said, some hidden internal work might go a long way. If I were you, and intended to keep my car, I'd get a hidden nitrous system. Cops can't make you open your hood, so it'll be cool, and when smog time comes you can just rip it out.

I wouldn't bother with an engine swap. A 2000 Z24 with less than 60k miles can be had from a private party for under 5 grand if you look hard enough, and with the money you can get for your car, it'd be a wash AT LEAST. I can't imagine under any scenario where swapping in another engine would be cheaper or a better alternative. Plus, with a 2k car, there's the GM supercharger to be had.

incorrect.

what you stated is the requirements when doign an engine swap that you dont have to go get checked out by a smog referee. if you do what u said u can do the swap and go get smoggd at a regular smog garage and everythign is cool.

however, you can swap engines in cars that werent offered originally for that modeal and IT IS LEGAL

there are restrictions tho. you can not put a suv/truck engine into a car but u can do vice versa. reason is you cant change vehicle type engine if it increases smog pollution catagory.

so say you want to put the redline engine into your cav. (what i was going to do) or a srt engine or a grand am engine. its perfectly legal (but requires alot of extra work). you have to swap the engine along with any and all stock smog equipment that would be on the saturn redline. then after it is complete you have to make an appointment with a smog referee and he will inspect every single part fo the engine checking vins on every part to make sure it is ok to be on there. when your done he'll give u ur sticker and you can take it to a smog shop.

I thought putting a different cat on there was not CARB legal?

I took the lower mount off because I felt no difference when it was on, other than having my balls rattle like crazy when I was at a stoplight.

i believe after 50k a "defective" cat can be replaced by law....just take a bat to it and put a fatty dent in it then you can get it replaced

and just because you didnt feel a difference with the lower mount in...doesnt mean its not doing anything...did you expect to gain a half second in the quarter with it on? No? Then you aren't gonna feel it hehe

There have been a few good suggestions...

Internal engine mods... like roller rocker tips, bored out TB, cam... these things can not be seen and you can pass smog with them.

As for your cat, you can have an exhaust shop chop the pipes in front of and behind the cat and put 2 1/4 on it by widening the orifice on the cat itself. They did this for me and now I have 2 1/4 all the way through. The stock cat itself is hi-flow.

poor ron--if i spent a bunch of money for header/exhaust/intake and was still slow i'd be pissed too

i finally realized that even the mighty 2.4 is slow. once you realize that cavaliers aren't sports cars you'll do better. i'm happy i can beat the majority of mildly modded four bangers and a few v6's. thats good enough for me.

on a side note, make me an offer on my car and you can have it. i found a 96 camaro z28 that i'm in love with but i can't afford it til my car's gone.

That's true, but w my 99 I look at it like this, atleast it's at the top of it's class as far as str8 line performance.

It was like giving running shoes to a man with no legs.

If there is any difference, it's very minimal and I can't tell the difference, i dunno.
