Sick of cops pulling me over for loud exhaust.....
Thursday, February 17, 2005 8:00 PM
Anyone ever have this problem before? Ive been pulled over three times for my muffler, and I'm getting sick of it, I know its probably not possible but is there anything that I can get to quiet this thing down? That is also legal, I looked at the resonator test pipes, but it says it won't pass emissions, so I don't know what to do right now, on my car right now I got the dual tip muffler, piece of crap, but thats what was on it when I bought the car, I'm planning on getting a 3.5' outlet muffler....This just sucks, I don't want to go back to a dinky stock exhaust, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Any feedback is welcome!

you can run whatever kind of muffler you want....pass emissions by puttin on a high flow cat and then just throw a 30" res. behind that..it's not hard...you can even make a cheap-o muffler sound good..it's all in the tuning. read the sticky at the top of the forum..it will give you a good idea. Remember loudest isn't the best

Yeah but is the resonator going to quiet down my exhaust at any means, Like it is advertised to do?

Well New York sucks when it comes to touching anything on your exhaust, although we have stores around here that sell it, and a place that bends pipes for catback, but its all still illegal, cops only will pull you over when they feel like being a jerk to a young kid, cop also said my plate lamp was out too, mainly the reason he pulled me over, then saw my exhaust, so that would be another ticket.

Well i live in NY, the Law states 95 db as the limit, and must contain atleast 1 cat, in working order.

So if you have a full exhaust consisting on a header, High flow cat, 18"+ resonator and a decent muffler, You should have no problems what so ever.

And what do i meant by decent?

Dynomax ultra flo, dynomax super turbo, most borla exhuasts, etc. None of that 3a racinf, APC stuff ect.

Fart cans do just that, fart!

If you get a muffler that doesnt stick out far looks relitively stock, and has a low tone, the 5-0 will not bother you. And besides, On decent mufflers, inorder to make it load you need to floor the pedal. Kinda like an intake. YOu here the sound, your on the gas too much. Its that simple.

And a resonator would not be called a resonator if it didn't work.

I think I had the borla xl turbo muffler before and it was pretty quiet but still decent. Right now I'm using the tenzo r x-spec its loud but it sounds pretty mean. I just went to court on the 14th for a loud exhaust and I beat it.

go out buy your self a Magnaflow muffler... and that should help... dont get a muffler that you see all the civics with that make them sound like they are going 100mph when they are in 1st gear.

I don't know, I was at the station last night, and one of the cops showed me what the law says about your exhaust, it says anything that increases noise, (no db limit stated) or anything that IS not the original muffler is in violation of ny state law. It also said the same thing for motorcycles and most trucks. Just because your inspection station will pass your exhaust, doesn't mean its legal, that came straight from the cops mouth, he is very well against this law, he actually wrote an article for the paper on how ridiculous it is, how kids dump all their hard earned money into, tint, exhaust, or w/e, then get pulled over for it and there goes their money out the window.

i am not from NY, but nothing says they using current laws. YOu will be suprised that some places don't keep up to date. So i would find out from the Law Library or online and make sure what they are telling you it true or someone here can point you in a direction to get the correct info. They may not like it but you can tell them this is the updated law for the state of NY. I know they may not like being told they are wrong.

I'm really thinking about stock exhaust now, but I was wondering(I don't know that much about exhaust so bear with me) If I could still do cat back, but put a stock muffler on it, is that worth while at all? I will admit driving to work everyday with my loud exhaust gets kinda annoying, so loosing my fart pipe really wouldn't bother me, its not worth getting pulled over on a monthly basis, when I pass an average of 5 cops a day, 1 out of the 5 is going to be a dick and pull me over.

So if yor stock muffler rots or rusts out, changing it could get you a ticket? Not likely. The absence of a muffler sure will though.

As of now, New York State Consolidated Law – Vehicle & Traffic,
Title 3,Article 9,Section 375,Subsection 31 states:

“31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise. Every motor
vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all
times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in
constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or
unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped
with a cut-out, bypass, or similar device. No person shall modify the
muffler or exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will
amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system of
such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler or exhaust system
originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and
exhaust system shall comply with all the requirements of this section.
A muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle
plates, or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust
gas from an internal combustion engine, and effective in reducing noise.
An exhaust system is a series of mechanical devices for the purpose of
receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and expelling
it into the atmosphere.”

Thats exactly what I read at the police station last night, normally I wouldn't worry about it but I drive on a road everyday, and this cop knows what I look like now, so everytime he hears me hes gonna be pulling me over, cuz hes a dueche bag.

Thats why you get low tone, low sound, good sounding exhuast, which is provided to you by the use of resonator, high flow cat, decent oval muffler, and tips no bigger than .25"s bigger then piping.

The idea is to not sound loud, and not to look stupid.

Keith where did you get your dynomax muffler from? Every site I go to its only for the earlier cavaliers.

They are relatively universal, Like all OEM mufflers, Just chech your measurements, and your in/out locations and go from there.

I got mine from Jegs of $35.

i just put on a Iperformance header and exhaust system. HOLY HELL its loud. but it is 2 1/2 inch with just a magnaflow muffler. im going to be adding a mangaflow resonator real quick like. nice part is it uses just a stock looking steel tail pipe...no polished muffler or huge tip.

Well I have decided to go with a magnaflow muffler, a 22' resonator, and a hi flow cat, I can't wait to get rid of the ricer muffler, I'm hoping this one will still sound great, but at the same time keep the po-po away. Thanks everyone for the help!
