SLOW 0-60times...please help!
Wednesday, March 09, 2005 3:13 PM
I read an old car and driver test online and an 88 Z24 ran 8secs 0-60. my 93 RS (about the same car) runs a 12.2 consistantly!?! why am i 4 seconds off? i know its old but geez thats a BIG jump. I'm slowly doing a tune up and ive added alot of lucas performance fluids. what else could be the problem? (oh yea, mine is an auto)

thanks,
Jeff

There is no way they got a time of 8 seconds unless it was 5-speed. Because the 2nd auto's sucked a$$. And since you have the suck a$$ auto, that's why you're 4 seconds off the mark, not to mention you probably need to do a complete tune-up (trans filter and fluid change, among all the engine stuff like plugs and wires.).

The difference is probably the transmission. The Z24 that C&D tested was probably a base model with the 5-speed manual, while I'm assuming your car has the 3-speed automatic. That accounts for a big difference, probably about 2 seconds, max.

The other 2 seconds is probably lost because the car is pretty old. As engines get older, they lose power, mostly because of compression loss and carbon buildup inside the engine. Give your car a complete tune-up, everything you can think of, and then run some Seafoam engine cleaner through the throttle body, gas tank, and oil.

That should get your 2 seconds back, good luck

that seems really fast for an 89 z24.....thats the 2.8 which was a little slower then the 3.1

last time i was at the track one of those ran like a 16.7....but then again i duno if it was auto/manual or what kinda shape it was in

well i know a 2.8 auto beretta that ran a 16.7 at the track with cone filter and exhaust. so say its about 17.1 seconds 1/4 mile stock so thats probably around a 0-60 time of just under or around 10 seconds.

You G-tech'd it at 12.2 ?or just used a stop watch. if so thats not gonna be accurate.

yes i used a stop watch so it wont be accurate, but i know i wasnt off by 4 seconds (or 2 now because of the auto) my goal is just to get this car back down to stock speed. my friends pretty much stock honda can runs 13's, i'm not impressed with a 12 when my motor is twice the size. I'm working on getting enough money for a complete tune up (i work two jobs to pay for just my insurance) i'm gathering up everything and then am going to do it at once so its fresh.

i did put "gunk trans-medic" in my tranny today because the shifting feels mushy and delayed.

i'll keep you updated,
Jeff

Well u could start by doing small things like checking your air filter, fuel filters spark plugs, and other sensors. The you could make a intake or buy one off ebay.then you could buy exhaust.U should be able to get a better time check those things first they could do the most for you!

i already have an intake, it really helps past 5000RPMs, probably shaved .5 sec...if that.
I think i heard the o2 sensor can make a HUGE diffrence, and i notice my fuel economy is crap (mind u my old car was a 1.6L diesel so maybe its just me) the o2 sensor could create bad fuel economy too, but i only get around 350Kms to a full tank, is that about right for a 3.1L?

thanks,
Jeff
