What makes a Exhaust pop?
Wednesday, March 09, 2005 9:33 PM
I have a 99 Z24 its all stock except for a straight through APC exhaust. Sometimes when its in park and i rev it up, it makes some nice popping sounds, its really popular here in europe, but sometimes it doesnt do it at all. My question is, how can i make it pop more and will i loose all popping if i change to a 2 1/2 pipe

I HATE THAT SOUND haha but hey whatever makes you tic right. Maybe the lack of back pressure from using bigger pipe. I dont know exactly

im pretty sure its unburnt fuel being ignited by the heat of the exhaust, sounds like hes been watching rally races, when they downshift and they get backfire and everything, prob cuz they have unburnt higher octane being ignited inside the exhaust on its way out, its jus cuz when u rev up ur engine the rpms drop at a rate that makes fuel unburnt and flows into the exhaust, i guess rally cars get this much more cuz they shift down at high rpms and very fast before hitting a corner

I think he'll need two to get the ricey sound he desires, lol. You think it sounds good popping? Popping is just a sign that something in the exhaust is not efficient. If you really wanted it to happen more get a smaller than stock pipe and an even bigger straight through muffler. What a strange guy I remember when I had that popping sound lasted about a month before I just got fed up and had to get a whole header back done.

It probably makes the pops when you hit your revlimiter (sending unburt fuel in to the exhaust). The fuel ignites and you hear a pop.

the pop noise is from lack of back pressure in your exhaust , think of it as a series of waves if you do not have enough back pressure they flow out to quickly and do not pull each other there for a gap occurs letting cooler air travel into your exhaust when the hot exhaust gasses hit the cooler air it makes a popping noise it is a science to figure out how much back pressure you need for a performance yet non restrictive exhaust system a larger pipe will only make it worse

i agree... mine does the same thing but only when i hit the rev limiter...

If you put the exhaust on your self it is most likely a small hole on non sealed area which allow fresh oxygen in causing the unburnt fuel to Ignite. thus giving you your popping sound.

unless you have major engine mods or a turbo you should not have enough unburnt fuel in your exhaust to ignite that is the whole point of engine management systems if you don't believe me try to put in a flamethrower kit.

ps a rev limiter in cavies shuts the fuel off so it can't dump extra fuel into the exhaust

Your all probably thinking im a 16 year old kid wanting his car to be louder, well your half right :-) ....i want a loud exhaust cause a lot of cars around my area (Croatia) want to be loud but can't or sound like crap, so my car really stands out and they all like that sound. I guess its kinda hard for everyone to understand in the states, but thats what they like there....once my car was in the garage being repaired, the mechanic started it up and reved it from the TB and it was popping like CRAZY, it has never popped like that for me. Soon after a crowd formed around the garage all wanting to get a look at the car. It kinda hard to believe how much a cavalier stands out over there. Anyways, i've never been able to get it to pop the same way, expecially when the engine is hot.....My only question now is, Will a 4 2 1 header, 2.25 exhaust and straigt through exhaust make my car pop more or less.

Ok most of you have no idea what your talking about, the chance of an engine completely burning 100% of all the air fuel mixture is next to impossible, when the exhaust pops like hat it doesn't mean your car is messed up, it doesn't mean your hitting your rev limiter or that your a ricer, and bigest surprise to most people is that it is NOT a backfire, back fire is when mixture ignites to soon and pops out the intake cause the intake valve is still open. You could light a cigerette with a hot header, no imagine what a more flamable air gas mixture will do when it hits the pipe that hot, thats right it burns up. to the moron that said somehtign about its because the car im inefficient blah blah blah, that doesn't mean somehtign worng with it, hence why cars come wih catalitic converters, so the cat can burn up all the fuel vapor and everything. WHen you change the exhaust and itslouder/free flowing you are simply hearing the pops that have always been there you just couldn't hear going through a factory mufler.

Well put. Couldn't have said it better myself.
As far as popping more, take the resonator off of your exhaust. It will be a lot raspier and will definitely pop more.

my car makes that raspy popping sound when its kinda cold and i hit once. I have a 2200 with stock pipes and a magnaflow glasspac w/o the resonator. After my car warms up real nice then it all goes away and i get i low rumbly nice sound.

i dunno what causes it, but my friend bought a 50 dodge caravan, he brought it out, he had bought a 20 intake for his old laser...so we put taht on the van, and i torched holes in the cat and muffler, and that thing pops like noooo other, pops a million times everytime he gives it some revs....hope that helps u

darkstars really should learn to read. cause he said the exact same thing I did then called me an idiot . If you want it to pop more I have a straight though exhaust no resonator or muffler a high flow cat and full length headers and a 3in echo tip and it pops so bad people often ask if my car is running properly.
