O.K I dont know if im in the right forum but oh well move it. I was just wondering if a s.a.f.c is compatable with our cars. How hard is it to install I know u have tap in to the e.c.m and how do u tune it ? Through a dyno or by hand what kind of increase/gains do u get THANXS

You install an SAFC to control your injectors because of another mod, like a turbo charger. On a stock car, this won't give you any gain, since adding fuel without adding air is just going to make your car run pig rich and bog down. So unless you get boost, the SAFC really isn't a good investment of $270.

You're wrong on that one. I'm not boosted and I need the SAFC2. I've got it installed on my ecotec. My car was running rich before I installed the cams, this was while on the dyno. I added the level zero cams and was running so rich I fried the cat. I'm currently pulling anywhere from -5% to -15% fuel. So, if your car is running too rich or lean, it can help.

The SAFC does more than add fuel, it can take it away. It does this by adjusting what the computer sees for airflow and adjusts the fuel input accordingly. Lower the air flow seen by the computer 5% it'll take out 5% fuel.

Only way to properly tune it is on a dyno.

you can also use it on nitrous applications if i'm not mistaken. but i probaly am

Yup, you can. The SAFC-2 has the option of having two different settings. So if you're using nitrous you can switch back and forth between track settings and daily driving settings.

Yeah it is actually supposed to give you a little gain while on n2o but the biggest gain is the efficentcy and consistency

It also helps so you don't lean out too much and go boom. That's the best bonus.

tuning depends upon the shop. The only way to properly tune it is on a dyno. $120 for an hour of pulls and tuning.

I had Andrew Neufang install mine. Install went fine. But there were a few problems. The map sensor doesn't like the SAFC2. It kept causing two different low voltage codes on the map. I had to change the map sensor to a map sensor out of an Aztek and wire in a resisitor to bump up the voltage the computer was seeing. Do a search and you'll find the threads about what to do.

the good thing about the SAFC 2 is that you can adjust your fuel curve in 200 RPM increments as opposed to 500 RPM increments with the original SAFC. but yes he is right, you can get a much more aggressive tune on an SAFC without boost. factory tunes are rather conservative and some people have gained up to 15 or 20 horsepower just by a good tune.

but if you want to take away fuel, all you have to do is put a potentiometer (variable resistor- knob style) on the map signal line and play with it until your mixture is down to where you want it. Doesn't seem to be worth it to me unless you are using it to add.

putting a potentiometer is kinda pointless. Even though in a sense it is the same thing. In fact, it's a fairly stupid idea. If you want to do that, go right ahead.

The SAFC adjusts the fuel air ratio at every 200rpm points. While lower in the rpm band you may need to lean it out (take away fuel) higher in the rpm band you may need to richen it. There are also different settings for low and high throttle opening. If you're on a track going WOT, you don't want the same settings. Having these options allows you to customize and perfect the a/f mixture for best performance. Good luck doing that with a resistor.

Just like Arnjolt, I needed it also cause I bought cams and I ended up running rich. Soon as I took it to get it installed and tuned, ran like a beauty on the highway.

If your car is stock, it's not really needed. I'd say after you get through with a full exhaust, intake and a couple more bolt ons, you could consider getting it for the future if you have more plans that you want to do to the car. I think as soon as you step into the motor, you will need it.

I am installing a SAFC in my car on friday.... they work wonders. It is nice to be able to just adjust your fuel map on the fly.

I just ordered one of these and I see in the downloadable manual that there is no info for any chevys or cavaliers for that matter.

I will hopfully be reciving mine tomarrow and I was wonder if you don't adjust the fuel curve at all then is it just set to the stock settings?? I really don't want to adjust it just yet. I will be done with my turbo kit soon and I want to install it now instead of waiting so I have less to do later.

As I understand, if you get the sensors set up correctly and use a 0% correction factor, its the stock settings. I'm counting on this since I'm also installing mine before many of my other mods.
