I'm swapping cams among other things and need some advice from those who have been down this road before. I am trying to remove the camshaft housings but having troubles. Everything behind the timing cover is off along with everything on the opposite side of the camshaft housings. I have the 4 timing chain housing to camshaft housing bolts off on each cam housing. All cam housing to cylinder head bolts are off as well. Basically the cam housings are loose, the gasket seal is broken but I can't pull them straight off like the manual states. The cam housings are recessed into the timing chain slightly which is the reason why they won't pull straight off. I have tried lifting up on the side of the housings (opposite the timing chain) then pulling out and up to release them, but they are catching on the valve springs. I've been afraid to pull on the housings to hard, don't want to break anything underneath or gouge the sealing surfaces. It looks like if the timing chain housing was loosened and pulled away from the engine slightly that the housings would easily come off. Has anyone tried this or have any recommendations?
Why are you trying to take the whole tower out? You should just take the cover off...
Its really hard to get those things off, if you are taking the whole thing off. If you just want the cover off, I think you can thread the IDI cover bolts into some of the holes and it will lift the cam cover off.

Yeah if you are trying to take of the cover.
The GM shop manual from what i remember when we did it say the other holes that were not used (or did not have any bolts in threm)are what you use to take off the cover. You use the bolts you took out and put them in those extra hole and screw them down in the there withe a rachett. You will need use 4 bolts on each houseing so that it seperates the cover apart evenly.

I had already threaded the cam housing bolts into the threaded inserts to seperate the cover. I believe the timing side of the housing still caught on the timing chain housing lip. The other end of the housing caught on the oil seal, which binds if it isn't pulled straight off. Anyway, I'm at work now, will have to take a closer look when I get home. I'll take pics if I'm still having problems.
I am not sure where you are talking about but the black cover on the other side of the engine has to come off and remove the timing chain and then remove the cam gears to remove the cams.

You have to work it out. Keep using the bolt s to push the cover off, it will come out.

Finally got time to work on getting the cam housings out. They finally came off, just needed more four letter words than I used before. Never hurts to get an early start on St. Patrick's day either.

hey shifted, what all is involved in taking the cams out and putting in the new one, should i replace the lifters, and what do i need to remove to get to the cams, is the same as what BoilerZ24 did?
i need to know becuase the shop just once too much for them to be put in here, and i feel that i can do it my self with the right directions.

I've had a stuck lifter for a couple of months, a week ago the noise got significantly louder. I stopped driving the car at that point. I wanted to take the entire cam housings off to get a better look at the valve stems and springs. I'm also putting on a header and new water pump so removing the cam housings makes it easier to get to the exhaust manifold bolts.
