You're only as strong as your weakest link. So it would be kind of pointless, I think. Might effect sound negatively, too.

Point made.

And the stock size is 2" or 1 7/8" ?

2" for sure on the ECO, but i'm pretty sure my 99 2.4 had 1 7/8

Oh lord..........

1 7/8" is such an odd number.

Are there reducers available to step up to a 2" or 2.25" ?

My 2000 Cavi with a 2200 is 2" stock.

99% sure cuz I had to replace part of it when I bottomed out and squished some of it.

anybody remeber this?

seems alot of people are getting headers as of late, and just putting up some info on what you are going from....to.

stock exhaust... as anyone can tell you is restrictive. doesnt matter the engine, 2.4, 2.2, ecotec...whatever... thats why its called stock.

now on most all gm vehicles, especially this level. its an economy car. its restrictive.

after the cat the exhaust diameter is 2 inch outer diameter, which roughly equates to about 1 and 7/8th inner diameter.

now heres the barn blower....

most people here complain about this and that exhaust not sounding right with a stock manifold and down pipe....

has anyone checked the size of the pipes they add in difference of what remains up front? prob not...

THIS, LADIES & GENTS .....is your STOCK manifold (2200 2.2L)

snakey lookin fella aint it? disregard the hood project in the rear, but the manifold is what most all stock cars have... a stock manifold. restrictive.

HOW RESTRICTIVE?

enough to make even the toughest bunghole pucker at sight....

thats right 1.627 measly inches....and thats JUST the OUTER diameter.... so you know with two walls per measurement, the diameter inside is smaller....

HOW SMALL IS IT? you might ask....

around 1.5 inches.... the actual measurement is 1.471 inches

So when you have all these posts about someones exhaust sounding to high pitched or like the local kid in the neighborhood sticking his tongue out at ya and making a "raspberry" as its called by some, at ya... now you know...

you are basically getting all the extra sound cause the stock catback is restrictive, but so is the exhaust manifold and then you add this gigantic pipe near the end, with a relatively non absorbing muffler and no resonator which roughly does as shown below...sorry the pictures didn't copy over ids you want the whole artical go

here

Cinny, good link.

I was originally considering 2.5" all the way back, but seeing how the ID of the 2200 is less than 1.5" a 2.25" exhaust from front to back should do fine for a few years until I have the coin to boost it.

I imagine the tubing on my Z24 is similar in size, if not the same......

Ah well, time to change my plans

Remember the restriction on the 2.4 liter motor is the exhaust.... this is why people that build these motors often opt for a 086 head... because it flows more on the exhaust side.
You can't keep eatting, if you can't $hit it out. This has always been a big debate on here.
The long and short of it is: A larger exhaust will free up more top end from the larger reduction in back pressure. Yes, Peak power may be affected, but is Average power or your power band bigger is the real question. Do want Lots of torque? or lots of top end pull??? I choose 2.5" for a higher power band.... because I like to keep my motor in the area where it makes the most power where I live.

Do what u want... but honestly I would choose 2.5".

This months projects: Completion and Installation of Homemade Turbo System, Brakes, Fiberglass sparetire enlcosure and amp rack.
