Well by searching the partsvoice.com, i was able to locate the timing chain itself but no sprockets, at a dealer that has a wherehouse full of discontinued parts. They showed to have one of them and he went to go put his hands on it and just called me back and said he has it, and it is a double roller chain and its 59 bucks. So in a day or two ill call him back and order it. I need to go to autozone and orielly and see if they can get the double roller sprocketts. Orielly seemed like the best place, if they can get a true double roller set, then ill probably just buy the whole set from them, they listed one Cloyes for something like 60-70 bucks.
Ill update as i get more info, also if you can get me that info out of the chevy power book that would be great.
Thanks
Mike

I can't wait to find out the results to all of this!!!
New sig in the works
I just did some checking, and I can't find any listing for this chain in the newest Cloyes catalog. But... a quick trip to partsamerica.com (Advance Auto) and I find A.E. Clevite # 9182 timing chain (chain only), for 1982 1.8L engine, with the description "double roller chain." Their price is about $44. Additionally there are two timing chain dampers listed, Clevite 95137 and 95138. I'm unsure of the differences between the two. There are also separate listings for the cam and crank gears. These are Clevite S532 for the cam gear and S529 for the crank gear.
There's some mystery here, though. The local Advance Auto doesn't list the Clevite parts, and the SA Gear brand parts they can get are single roller type.
But this is not the same part as what's sold for the 1983+ cars, it's 1982 specific. The 1983+ part number matches the 1993 2.2L chain part number.
The local store has the1982 single roller chain and gears together for about $20. I believe I'll try and convince them to open some boxes for me tonight.

Yeah i did some checking at autozone and they say they can special order it, but cant say for sure tis the double roller chain.
Oreilly has the cloyes parts, but im still waiting to here if they can get them.
I also emailed clyes and they said they were the original OE manufactuer of that chain and it is a double roller and that they still make it and it should be available form my local oreilly or other retailer that sells Cloyes products. So i need to call oreilly back and find out the skinny.
Well i just got off the phone with Oreilly, and they said at first its a normally stocked item, but none of the stores have it and the warehouse doesnt even have any, so basically they said i could place an order but didnt know when it would come in.
I then checked napa's online site, and they show the 82 1.8 as a double roller set for 58 bucks and it says it usually ships out in 3-5 days. Heres a pic of the timing chain they have in the description. BTW: they show a silent chain and pic for 83+ so i dont think its a generic pic.
Heres the link to Napa's Website.
Thats all the info i have for now, but it seems promising that i can get it.

I visually confirmed that the Advance Auto / SA Gear part is a single roller chain. It looks much more durable than the silent link type chain used on later engines. There were some notable differences between the two. The diameter of both cam and crank gears is substantially larger. When looking at an aluminum timing cover from a 94 engine, I had to wonder if there was enough clearance. The height of the gears is greater. There's a "step" machined into the 82 crank gear which moves the teeth closer to the front of the block. The 83 gear didn't have this. The thrust surface of the 82 cam gear is larger than the replacement 83 gear, but when I looked at an OEM gear from a 94, this didn't appear to be a problem. Hopefully the NAPA part will be correct.
I didn't finish typing up the instructions for the timing chain. Instead I tried to get something set up to scan the 26 pages of 2.0 race engine prep from the Chevy Power Manual. Maybe I'll have better luck with that tonight.

Well i kniow the one on napas websit said double roller.
I also called a place here in town called EPW, Engine Performance Wharehouse and they said they had one in there Dallas location. Butr that i had to go thru my local oreilly auto parts to get it.
So i called oreilly back up and gave them the scoop and they were suppose to order it fo me, and if they did then it shoud be here later on today sometime.
And i think i came up with a good solution to the lifter problem. Why not just just some aftermarket rolle rlifter designed for non roller cam blocks, that have the link bar connecting the 2 together, and getting rid of the plastic lifter retainer all together. The 2.2/2200 lifter diameter is the same as a small block V8, and you will need custon pushrods anyway.
I have also been thinking about going with a solid roller setup instead of hydralic, i can pick up an easy 20-30 horses this way and more upper RPM like i want to. Im going to do alittle more research and ill let everyone know what i find.
Also if you could get that info on the 2.0 race engine buildup scanned and and emailed to me at HotRodV6@aol.com i would shurley appreciate it.

I'll do what I can to get the scanner working. That may take a little time though. There's info on using smallblock mechanical lifters in that article along with some guideplate dimensions to switch to smallblock pushrods. It's good stuff but I've never copied it because up 'till now, I was the only one that seemed interested in it.
I though about the aftermarket roller lifters also. I guessed the reason they weren't suggested was the price. You could always buy a set of the smallblock lifters and change the checkvalve spring. AFAIK that's the only difference between low perf and high perf GM hydraulic roller lifters.

PJ (TheFlyingSquirrel) has a server, I'll check with him later tonight and see if he has room/bandwidth enough to host it for you
HotRod and SlowoleJ, if either of you has instant messenger, hit me up on AIM sometime, my s/n is BlvdUvBrknDr3amz. I'm thinking maybe with your combined knowledge, perhaps I could put together something like a "2200 Performance Buildup Book", that way all of this great information gets preserved.

Your the man, that is awesome. If you dont mind until we can find a server to host it on, would you email me a copy so i can take a loot at it before i go and buy the timing chain set so that i can make sure it will work and what all is involved.
Email me at HotRodV6@aol.com Thanks.
Also im HotRodV6 on AIM also so if you want to IM me if you see me on thats cool with me.
Also one thogut i had for hosting the info is the NY J-body website in there Library, they already have some good info on the 2.2/2200, as long as you ignore the one about the secret cam swap between 95-97 and 98+.
May want to give the site a look and see if there is someone you can email about it. Just a thought.

Cool. Sorry, no AIM though. Besides, there's many more people here that know specific info about the 2.2 / 2200 engine than I do. They should be included if you're putting together a cookbook.

He HotRodV6, what were the results of the timing chain you were trying to get from O'Riely's, was it what you thought it was?
This has been a good thread, I wanted to keep it going. Too much good info to let fade into obscurity!

Yes, actually they were ecatly like thgey are are supposed to be, double roller and all. The cam gear will have to have the center hole enlarged to work with the newer cam, but other than that i think it will work just fine.
I havent been abel to test fit everything because my engine and hed is still at Cometic getting the MLS gaskets made for us98+ 2200 peeps.
Ive also figured otu what im going to do for lifters, im going to dump the stock lifter and plastic retainers, and use some aftermarket small block chevy roller lifters that have the link bar to keep them straight, cheaper than the supposed Hi-Po rebuiult stocker lifters from JBP, and plus im thinking about going with a solid roller instead of the Hydralic, i can pick up an easy 20-25 horses and i can put resisters on the knock sensor so the PCM doesnt wig out.
Once i get my engine back, ill get the lifters in and rockers bolted back up and measure for the pushrods. Its going to be atleast 3-4 monhs before i can move forward with my build. Im going to do some more research and see which way would be better for the lifters, solid of hydralic, and ill post what i find.

I'm sure you've done this, but it's probably a good idea to check lifter bore spacing before spending $$. While the lifter diameter may be the same between 2.2 and smallblock, there's no guarantee that any 2 lifters are the same distance apart.
I wonder if the type of tie bar makes a difference in clearance? Some are attached to the side of the lifter, some are attached in the plunger area.
-->Slow
Well actually i havebt checked the spacing, since my engine is at Cometic, ill have to check it out once i get it back. Althought just by looking it is very close,if not the same.

The side bar type link may be the way to go on the lifters. Just look at the way the side bar attaches to the lifters through the slot. If anything the spacing might be a little closer and all you would have to do is lengthen the slot on the inside so that there is no interference. Just make sure the slot is round on the end and is deburred. The side bar might be hardend, so the grinding/cutting might be a little more difficult, but can be done. Also make sure you have about 0.060" clearance around the bar from the block and other side bars.
I looked in the 7th edition of the Chevy Power Guide, the SBC's lifter centerlines are 1.56". The diagram of the 2.0L(pg 2-9) that was posted above doesn't show the lifter centerlines on our blocks, so you might have to measure you block when you get it back. That is , unless someone out there has a block handy and a set of calipers to measure the lifter centerlines for you.
The lifter hight might be different, but i doubt you'll have any problems getting pushrods made, if someone out there doesn't already make them in the length you need(ref. pg 2-12 in the 2.0L build-up).
BTW, what is the diameter of the of the center hole and or the dowel pin on our new cams? That and any other changes that may need to be made, aside from the hole and spacer for the tensioner(Step 5 on pg2-4).
This is so when I have to change the timing set, I can have the parts ready before I start the swap.
following closely guys

now i'm kinda thankful that i can't commit to building a car yet, because maybe by the time i'm ready you'll have found out more... can't wait to see what develops

I just measured mine...I had to eyeball it a little because the dial on my calipers prevented them from getting in deep enough for a contact measurement...but I read an inch on the dot center to center...far from the SBC
