J Body Performance 3rd Gen Reflash Feedback?
Thursday, October 06, 2005 6:07 AM
Has anyone tried this, if so, what was your experience like with the JBP reflash? I need to know if these guys are actually able to tune in the ballpark of what each unique tuner engine requires, as far as driveability and power is concerned..

If anyone knows of any alternatives, speak up please!

^^ really, So you gained 70hp from:
motor mounts, 62mm thottle body, ported lower manifold, ported head w/5 angle and stiffer springs, pulleys, home made intake, and header back exhaust.

Oh and jbp reflash. Seems hard to believe. Proof is needed.

With some time advancing and some added fuel I could see about 145whp at the most......

I am really not a fan of that idea. Let's consider options. DRIVE to Canadia to JBP's shop to get a reflash that we can't be 100% positive works like a charm. There's no dyno tuning involved. So... umkay there. $600 @!#$in dollars? NO WAY. Then, any time you want to detune or change setups, guess what, gotta go back to JBP for another reflash. OR you could go out and buy a Greddy E-manage, and have it installed and tuned for a little over a grand, have data logging, a good dyno tune, and the ability to adjust it with a laptop and a little knowledge.

I've got a spare PCM I was going to send them, but the price is steep just to see if it will work.

They will not program a PCM out-of-car.

WAY WAY TOO MUCH FUD AROUND HERE THESE DAYS!!!!! ohh wait its always been that way!! then you whine about no products.. sheesh

from the man himself :

"yes we need all the specs of what u have done to the engine, and a
list of what u want done to the pcm... you need to send your pcm along with
the attached sheet... the sheet just has what most people want done, if you
would like something that isnt on the sheet just write it down on the
back..."

yes you can send your pcm through the mail to them.. Spots i wasnt targetting you with my initial statement as you tend not to fud much, but i gotta call you out on this one. they are able to do a bunch with our pcm, and things you wouldnt normally think of (like make a 2.4 pcm run off just the crank for timing.. think what that means!!!). if i still had my car i would have given them a shot, but so is life.

Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..

Just like the RSM reflash, there is no proof that they actually do anything.

its not that much more money to run a standalone. The proof is in the pudding

I haven't ordered from JBP yet, cause I'm scared that I wont get my parts in on time.

Well...I only ordered one part (3spd shift kit) from them, but I got it within 2 weeks. The only wierd thing about it is that it came in a box from a UV Sterilizer for a fish tank. lol...I haven't had problems yet, but it was only the one part so far.

well i also heard that they stopped doing the reflash?

Is this true?

If they can truly do what they claim hen its really not that bad of a deal, but the problem lies in the fact that they dont have a dyno to confirm that the changes made really did what the customer wanted them to do, i mean sure resetting the rev and speed limiters and fan turn on temps is easy enough to say yet it works, but when it comes to programming yuo got to have a dyno to tell if your going in the right direction.

I was going to get a spare PCM and send it to them when this first came out also, but havent seen proof that it works, so im now going to wait for the HP Tuners software to come out.

I see it just as the superchips out there for other cars. It's a hit and miss situation. Every car will respond differently to every change, and you just can't predict it. Seeing as every other change is free, I say if you don't mind the down time, go for it (just be aware that it will take quite a while to get what you want. Also, it would be next to impossible to get a good tune on a heavily modified engine this way. But for bolt-ons, it should be okay I guess (just basic timing advance mostly).
As far as my ordering experience with JBP goes, I've only ordered the HD retainers from them, and they took a couple weeks to get here. But, when you deal with international shipping you have to expect delays. Oh yeah, mine also came in a weird box from something else

Well, to those saying that it needs to be tuned on a dyno, granted, to extract every last ounce out of it, yes, you're absolutlely right.

BUT. Over in VW-world, there is an up and coming chiptuner called Unitronic, who deal in mail-order custom chiptuning. You give them your specs, mods, octane, purpose (autoX, drag, etc.), and they will right you a custom file to the tune of about $800. You get this file, labeled V1, and 90% of the time it has been VERY close. Then you run some logs and send them back the data, and they in turn send you Version 2 of your file. Run some more logs, and by Version 3, it is as close to perfect as it will ever get. How they do it, I don't know, but the vast majority of the big guns in 1.8T drag racing are switching to them for big turbo software and after several months i have YET to hear a bad thing about them. And if you think the JBO is ruthless, try the 1.8T forum on Vortex Beyond that, the subsequent dynos and datalogging has shown precisely how dead on the Unitronic software is.

Now, do i know for sure whether or not JBP has tuners like this in house? No. But its not impossible to get a very very good tune without having the car there to dyno. However, for them to be in Canada and then say they won't tune the ecu out of car indicates to me that they themselves aren't very confident in their abilities.

For the money, if you don't have to worry about OBD2, run Megasquirt. With research, its not that hard to tune at all.

I like the idea of swapping in the stock pcm for emissions testing every 2 years, instead of trying to rig a standalone to pass emissions.. I'd have my stock one as a backup incase the one I send them is screwy afterwards. Seems a bit risky for the amount of money though, with no real concrete feedback so far from people who've had the reflash done.
