well apparenlty this thread went down like the titanic. i bought a manifold from the junkyard and started porting. on one runner i have alot of rough spots. should i use a high grit sandpaper to smooth it out and also the other runners as well?

High grit will tear into it and make it even rougher... take it in 2 or 3 steps to low low low grit to make it super smooth.

^ you dont know what the @!#$ you're talking about.

the higher the grit means the finer the sandpaper, means that high high high grit will make it super smooth.

low grit is like trying to wipe your ass with wood instead of TP.

Any updates on how these cars are doing?

Anyone get a dyno before and after on this yet?

Got my eBay intake manifold going at it today.

If it works I'm putting my stock intake manifold back on eBay!

This is what I was looking for.
Well, all of you who have done this are NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! very mechanicly inclined.
So I take my manifold off to see THESE RESTRICTIONS???

There aren't any!!!

The manifold is as smooth as it can get because it is Plastic!!, and those ridges that you guys are shaving off!!!!

You all know what they are called???

Velocity stacks!!, they are square and each runner has one.

Now if anyone can give me a reasonable explanation WHY IN THE HELL why you wanna cut into a Vel. stack, please do and if it is good enough and if it does yeild HP I will go and SHOOT right now.

You guys are LOSING HP/TQ with you NOW VERY POOR AIR VELOCITY AND FLOW.

People by no mean don't do this CRAP anymore!!!
Maybe the TB port, if you have a bigger TB so that you can acctually benefit from it, but don't touch SO CALLED RIDGES. LMAO
AND DON'T SAND ANYTHING, you can only make it worse.

because there is no vel stack! vel stacks are individual and intake manifolds have alot to do with vel but also take into account pulses. there you need the ports to be well blended with out sharp edges.(port matching) we are not jaking the ports larger just making a smooth obstructing free intake. and my throttle body is blended smooth and polished like a vel stack. also smoothed out the shrot side radius in the 90deg rubber intake neck. my car is very peppy!

Anybody know the right bits to get for a Dremel to do this mod? And since SunCavi said what he said I haven't heard any feedback? I'm having mixed emotions on this mod? Anybody have anything to say? Thanks
Re: Stock ECOTEC intake manifold SUCKS!

i thought velocity stacks were only used in racing applications. clearly the cavalier ecotec motor was not designed for racing applications stock.

it sounds like port match and tb side boring is beneficial, i wouldnt touch the ridges though.

sounds like they gave up a few hp and torque in the lowend to gain a lil more in the high end.

Event or someone, ...is it true there is a gain of more than the loss of the lowend tq/hp in the mid=high end?

we will never know without a dyno.

just did this mod and i also have a ported TB. This mod did add sound, but thats about it, who ever is posting that this adds power is wrong! I only did this to see if the person who posted this was full of @!#$ or not, thought it could not hurt.

Im with SunCavi on this,

The only reason anyone else should do this is if someone actually DYNO's their car before and after, perferably in the same day.

The ridges are not velocity stacks, obviously you are looking at the wrong thing. Below the main intake "tube" the internal runners to cylinders 2&3 are squashed to the side to allow air to enter the manifold through the main tube. On either side of these runners on the inside of the manifold(outside of the runners), there are about 1/4" protrusions or ridges on either side which protrude CROSSWAYS into the airflow coming into the manifold in a V shape. Those are not velocity stacks. There IS a type of velocity stack(4 of them to start the individual runners) deep in the manifold, but that's not what was modified. Those were completely untouched. As for the other side, it was simply PORT MATCHING, only backwards, matching the runners for a SMOOTH transition into the LARGER than manifold size intake runners.

Nobody is forcing anyone to do this! I don't give a crap! It's you're loss, I was just giving an idea that works in my books. It makes sense, if you don't understand why, then you are the mechanically disinclined one, sorry. Nobody's going to go pay $100 for dyno time to see if a free mod works, so get your head outta your butt! We're not talking huge gains here, but it all adds up, doesn't it! Some people pay $300 for a bigger TB, you probably get about the same gains from something like that, especially with the stock manifold. Of course the mfr will dyno test it, because they want your money, so you are paying them to test it when you buy it, basically. This is a free mod, I don't give a crap about proof, if you don't want to do it, I don't care, I don't lose money over it..

yeah, so after reading about this a little while ago, and then noticing on the intersate that my higher RPM's suck, and remembered reading that it would, could, might, whatever, but all in all increase my torque or HP in the uppers, well, i figured i try this mod..!!!

SO, here i am bringing this thread back, after doing this, and i do have to say, it helped quite a bit!!!! I was suprised.

Though i do have a few things to say.......
i noticed this, looking at the residue from the oil left between the head, and the manifold, that my manifold, looked like it was crooked.... or OFF, makes sense cuz, there is no specific spot, or a guide to mount it on there.........
whover was sitting there and styating that there are velocity stacks, obviously doesn't know what a F***ing velocity stack is!!!!!! LOOK IT UP DUMB@$$
next, i shaved mine as far as the runner started to dip down, since flaring it, i didn't think was gonna do any good....
Granted i probbaly made my holes biggger than what the head hole is, but IT DOESN'T MATTER, (unless you have forced induction) since an NA motor will SUCK air into the head....wait imagine this, you have a 2 inch pipe, and a 1 inch pipe, now join them, and seal the joint.... next put a suction onto the 2 inch pipe, and you will see that the 2" will want all two inches of air, but will only suck howere much the 1 inch pipe will allow it..... restricted it..... now swap it around, and you will see that the 1 insh pipe only needs a min. of 1 inch, so if you have 2 inches, IT DON'T care........... it will only suck what it needs........... hope that made sense for those non mechanicaly enclined.....

another thing i though of when doing this mod, if it helps, great, if not, it will prepare me for when i do a P & P.....

another thing for the genius, you said something about the fact that its NOT restrictive, and that we were going to be shaving off parts that help decrese the "turbulnace", WTF-ever... obviously you didn't look at it.... cuz by shaving some oif it off, you would actulally create a smoother transition between the two pieces of plastic..... and its a freakin runner, how much turbulence could there be that you would need to have somekind of rrig to decrease it..... C'MON THINK AbOUT IT
and one final thing, what exactly were you guys talking about shaving off near the TB, that transition is smoother than a baby's butt........ if youre talking about taking those fins off, that seperate the airflow and the sensor, then i really didn't see any need to do that.... unless you figured something out that i don't know. please explain that!!!! Thanx

all in all, this is great if you have a few hours, a dremel, and are mechanically inclined, cuz theres a bunch of plugs, and connectors that i disconnected, and someone could probably mess up thier motor if they forget how to put it back together, and not plug something in....

sorry for the rant, but i just had to say something.......
and thank you 04firetec for posting the idea....

PS, the biggest PITA was the fuel injector plugs, besides that, very easy.....

I said they are Velocity Stacks you Stupid M8ther @!#$, you tell me I am a dumb ass in my face at the Florida Winter Meet and I will wipe the track with your @!#$ face.

BTW, even better you dousche bag, bring your slow piece of @!#$ car and @!#$ race me at the Speedway and we will see who knows more about cars and air flow when I run circles around your 16 second slow piece of @!#$/

So you got something to say?

Well I never ran THAT slow with my OHV, so from seeing what Hondas run at the track that would be a 17 second car and not a 16 so I even gave you a benefit of the doubt.

You don't know JACK @!#$ about air flow, you own the world's slowest Eco. lmao

SunCavi_L61T3/T04E < --- let's make this even more FUN since you wanna call me out...... i'll definatly go to Bradenton to run you at the 1/4 mile for the winter meet, but i want you to come to one of the SCCA Solo2 events.... we'll race for the fastest final time....
you run with your turbo, and i'll run without.....
i'll already tell you that you will kick my butt at the 1/4, but i want to see how well you will do while going down an actual track!! i'll play your game, if you play mine....
and don't take this the wrong way either, but i only did a Solo 2 event once, same as the dragstrip, so i definatly don't have the right to brag about something.....

i think that would be reasonable, don't ya???

at breadenton we can arrange the details, so we don't get this thread locked too...

I'm only going off the posted pictures, but those lips look like mere obstructions to me, no resemblence to a velocity stack at all. However, like Event said, they may provide low-end torque to help with daily drivability for the 99% of people who won't be drag racing their grocery getters...

We all know SunCavi's a douche, that's why he's banned

As far as getting the plastic smoooth again, it's not physically possible with sandpaper, so leave good enough as good enough. You can't break the carbon-carbon bonds of the plastic molecular chains with your sandpaper, just tear entire moleculer strings out. You would have to remelt and remold the plastic.
