2.2 coil swap
Thursday, March 15, 2007 6:21 AM
Hey,

I hope this doesn't piss anyone off, (search button) but im looking for anything relating to the 2.2 coil swap, pics, guides, just anything that will help me pull this off. Now I found the Misnblu's Ignition Writeup but I'm having a hard time grasping exactly what needs to be done. I took automotive in school, (we worked on tempo's and 323's and such, nothing performance orientated) so I have a basic idea of how to move around a car. My dad knows exactly how to do this, but won't help because he is 100% anti 4 cylinder performance (mobar man). This is my second car, but my first that I can exactly mod. I'm pretty much just starting off in the automotive world, and all i need is alittle boost. From what I've read all over the web, the Org is the best place to find any info relating to my J body. Thanks in advance.

Ok I can help. His is more complicated cause he retained the 2.4 Icm and kinda used the 2.2 one as an adaptor iirc. This is what I did after reading lots of posts. Go to a junk yard and get the coils and Icm from a 2200(98 and newer) cavy or sunfire. You will also need need the wiring harness with atleast 12" of wire and the bracket. Now find a place to mount it in your engine compartment and modify the bracket as needed. Now take the old cover, Icm, coils and put them to the side. Cut off the old plug that went into the 2.4 Icm and attach the 2200 harness to it. The colors are all the same and there are about 10 wires. Hook up some spark plug wires and you are good to go. Took me less than 15 minutes.

Zs Z - Wow, the posts i read made it sound like there was at least two ways for this to be done, just wasn't 100% sure, thanks alot, when I do the swap I'll make sure I take pictures and make a guide to help future newbs such as myself.

Bulldog - So the ball of electrical tape next to the coils is where the connection is made, looks alot simpler than I thought. Thanks for the pics

So I use the coils from a 2200, take the ICM and coil pack off my IDI cover, and splice the 2200 ICM wires to the 2.4 plug.

My Moms 01 2200

And a good place to mount the coil pack would be on the innerfender

Sorry cars super dirty, just got it and its winter

couple things to make this easier

-all the wires colors match (from 2.4 to 2.2)
-the coils need a (+) and 2 (-).. so that is 3 wires in total, (you can use any coils, NEON, MSD, 2.2, whatever you like)
-ICM from 2.2 and 2.4 are the same (posts on here proving that)
-if you want to use you factory ICM, pull the IDI cover off and find the (3) wires that you need to plug into ANY coil, and plug them in to the coil, run wires, done

this is the stock 2.4 ICM you can see the 8 wires in, and see where the 3 wires come out (to coil if you want to keep the IDI cover)

this is the 2.2 ICM/coils and the 2.2 cruise module (used for the bracket)

using the cruise bracket to mount your coils/2.2 setup

some wiring pics I took

hope some of that helps.

Yes, but the pick of your moms doesnt have the right wiring for the swap. There are 8 wires all together(sorry I said 10 before) 2 from the small plug and 6 from the big plug. I will see if I can fit my cellphone under there and take a pic.

I just spliced into the wires because I was troubleshooting an issue, and the seperate coils and ICM didn't help, I finished my setup is stock ICM, MSD 6211, and dodge neon coils, it has much better response, and the 2.2 wires are still under the hood neatly packed away for any future breakdowns,

OK here are some pics if they help:

This one is real blurry but you can see that there are more wires in the one plug.

And this is how I mounted mine:

Hope that helps some.

Just trying tp make sure I understand the splicing...

Is the only reason for the splice is because the factory wires can't reach?
If the factory 2.4L cables were/are long enough, we shouldn't have to splice at all?

And all you guys still using the factory IDI cover.
You have the 2.4L coil white housing module removed from your IDI covers?

Still fuzzy on this set up,

No the splicing is part because it wont reach and part because the plugs on the 2.2 and 2.4 are different eventhough they are the same wires doing the same thing. I just have the cover on with no coils underneath...I thought my engine looked naked or somthing without it.

The factory wires can really on reach to the strut tower part where the coils would be mounted, barely if you stretched them.

Yes, im still using my factory IDI cover..
Yes, you have to remove the factory white coil housing.

How much of a performance increase is this or what is the benefit of this(more spark?)

ICM frmo 2.4 and 2.2/2200 are the same, some peole argue that the 2.2/2200 coils are more powerful. I used it to goto a MSD 6211 and Neon coils. starts 10x bettter, and better throttle response from 1000-3000.

anyone know what number cyl wire goes where? Starting from the passnger side?
Re: 2.2 coil swap

IIRC passenger side is # 1, 1+3 will fire together and 2+4, so if you hook it up wrong, it just won't run at all.
