Good thinking. Something like nylon would be nice and light.
Madjack probably wants to see an oak spacer

I was going to ask the same, why not aluminum. It's not under any great load, it won't rust and it'll match the head and/or the valve cover. If you're only raising the valve train 0.100", then 1/8" should be plenty tall enough, unless you're going to put a groove in the rail for another gasket.

John, I think I found you spring, Crane 37830-16, for Ford 4.6 &5.4L 2 valve V-8. I looked at the mild taper going up the spring and the diameter of the top, it is a single spring and looks close to the same height, so I decided to check their catalog and found this spring. The specs are as follows:
O.D top: 0.967", bottom 1.096"
I.D. top: 0.636", bottom 0.765"
Seat pressure: 85 lbs @ 1.640" (96 lbs @ 1.600" as on the 2200)
Open Pressure: 250 lbs @ 1.040"
Coil bind: 1.000"
Rate: 275 lbs/in.
Max Lift: 0.620" (0.580" on the 2200)

Damn, I wish I had looked at the latest Crane Cams Catalog before now. It's been a couple of years since I checked out their catalog and the latest is dated last year. I don't know what the OD of the valve guide is above the spring seat. I've been looking into everyone elses Ford Modular Motor springs and they either didn't come close to fitting (too tall or too short) or were too light of a rate.

Jason, if you still have access to that head, could you measure the guides above the spring seat, these springs just might fit without machine work.

Phil, see what I mean about discovering stuff. Once you think you get something figured out, something else comes along and like me it's after you started buying parts!

So now it looks like we have the Comp Cams 26981 springs for the 2.2L OHV and possibly the Crane Cams 37830 spring for the 2200(pending fitment testing/ measurements).

Maybe a highly waxed piece of oak! then the oil wouldn't soak in... lol. I can't be making jokes. I used a wood spacer on my intake manifold before too... haha. Fun times.

I just talked to the maching shop and they have never worked with phenlic so i dont know what else to use.

I making mine out of stainless

why is everyone worried about transfering heat to the valve cover!?

So I won't keep burning myself while working on it lol. I'd prefer nylon for the low weight and cost, but aluminum would be second.

The valve cover radiates heat to any part directly above it. On most engines, it's the intake manifold. And anything that helps reduce underhood temps is a good thing.

You're aware of the distinct possibility of galvanic action between the stainless spacer and aluminum valve cover damaging the cover? It's more likely in areas with a lot of humidity and / or more road salt.

im interested to see how the gasket is dealt with.....especially on such a thin spacer. does anyone know how deep the facory groove is?

Re: 2200 Valve Cover Spacer

Well I could do aluminum, then fuse it to the inside of the head, then the stock gasket could be used!
Re: 2200 Valve Cover Spacer

how soon could you get these done?

Why not machine a groove in the spacer like in the cover then use a 2nd gasket?
