well im all for seeing how it works for you, but imma play it safe... Karo achieved 250 with 1-3 lbs off, and thats good enough for me.

works for me man. any weight at all in my book is doing good.

its all up in the air.

my engine might go up in smoke in 20 miles, then again it might last 200,000 miles. we just dont know yet.

welp, my crank is now finished!

gutted, now weighs 36lbs vs stock at 45lbs. so 9 pounds of rotating mass completely gone.
knife edged.
balanced to closer than stock specs.
main journal oiling holes cross drilled and chamfered.
all bearing surfaces polished.
2.3 oil pump drive gear pressed on.

looking back i am hoping it was worth the rather large chunk of change i dropped on it.

its my thinking that doing this for my automatic car will be like using an aluminum flywheel on a manual car. which is something i do not think anyone has done before. so, i guess ill have the lightest rotating assembly ever used on an automatic. quite possibly could relief some of the massive amount of power it takes to spin the auto.

not going to be able to get very big n/a numbers out of this engine unfortunately, due to it having a near stock compression ratio, but i can certainly still hope for somewhere north of 165whp. which even if 165whp is all i hit ill still beat mike's automatic high record of 159whp.

but thats ok, this engine will be getting turboed eventually

Nice looking crank. Almost makes me want to pull out my crank to get lightened.

I would have done this to my 2.3 if I was still building it

Brad, now you need my .450/.430 LG0\W41 cams.......

Great work at unlocking some of the "secrets" by the way.

unfortunately after a summer of utter hell and crap me and my family have had to go through i havent yet went to even pick up the crank nor my engine from the machinist.

i am hoping to get it all picked up soon though. i just need mcmonie's cam gears, a set of main bearings, and to get the pistons and the crank coated then final assembly can be accomplished.

ill be taking tons of pics and i will be reporting back. its just going to be a while.

Update on this? I am going to do this to mine when ever I get the money and extra crank. Kinda a key part to my build theme, light is fast/power.

So... you guys are going to be running a harmonic damper with these right? else you'll likely make less power from stock thanks to the the crank now being even balanced or under balanced, cranks are supposed to be over balanced thats engine design 101.

oh god here we go with this argument. this is an age old deal that NEVER gets resolved.

that'd be fine if what we had was a balancer. its internally balanced. my crank was balanced closer than STOCK even with all the weight cut off. so i guess you could say its 'overbalanced' cuz they come pretty damn close right from the factory. my pistons and rods are all balanced to within 1 gram of each other, show me a stock LD9 setup that good.

i havent decided what PULLEY (not dampener) to use yet... i have an MD ld9 oversized aluminum one i bought so i can get a bit more output out of the alternator at idle.

if these guys that have been running these things for 2 years STRAIGHT at 8000+ rpm for 50 laps STRAIGHT i dont see how having it done on a street car is going to be anything more than a normal day for this crank. now, granted... i am running an automatic so im in uncharted territory.

No, over balanced means that the counterweights on the crank are heavier than the robs+pistons.

LOL nope. still in the box in the closet, sadly.

however.. tyler wichers has ran his gutted crank in his motor and it works just fine. his is actually 2 pounds lighter than mine...

I'm thinking about buying one done by the same guy. Should match nicely with the light rods and pistons. Brad I forgot if you planning to run this on a street car.

damn right i am. in an auto too... i HATE how sluggish and slow the auto revs up. i honestly believe it will help an auto car MUCH more than a manual...

and yes, hes legit like i said. ray cut that crank same as mine. i cant remember if it also got the knife edging though...

If you go "to light" you can have problems with a manual car. When you push in the clutch at low RPMs coming to a stop. It may stall. A drag racer I sold some pulleys to had EVERYTHING lightened. He couldn't run his idle less than 2200 RPM without it stalling, but he did have everything light. He was running low 13s with a full interior. He was from Brazil if I recall correctly. He went light on everything. He even cut the extra tabs off the inside and outside of the block.
