00 2.4 Knock sensor in to 97 block
Tuesday, October 27, 2009 9:25 AM
ive searched... all i could find are posts related to 97 knock sensors in to 99+ blocks... where the hole on the block for the knock is too small...

in my case the hole on the block is too big, and i need a helicoil to get it to being small again.

what size helicoil do i need?

thanks

I went to menards with the 97 knock sensor in hand, go to the brass fittings isle. Check what the threads are closes to on that board, it dont matter if its not exact because its brass going into a cast iron block...the block will make its own threads. I used a reducer fitting and broke off the ass end and drilled out the hole a little smaller than the bolt on the 99+ sensor, screw in the bolt. (again, it will make its own threads)

thats what I did and it seemed to work fine for me

im pretty sure gary voyles took a straight round stock rod close to the size of the block hole and threaded the outside of it. then cut it off, drilled a hole through the center of it and then tapped it on the INSIDE. then the smaller sensor screwed right in...

he had pics fo it some where...

i dont have a 97 knock... i dont have access to one, and i think its counter productive to get one just to measure out for a helicoil...

i know people have used a helicoil in the block, i just need the size so i can order it.

i had this same problem....i took both knock sensors to FASTENAL....they found the perfect size coil that i needed..it cost $15.00 for one coil but well worth it...also i thought about filling with JB weld and just before it turned hard..u can thread your bolt in slow and then back out slow and your threads will actually harden in your weld..then after its hard u can screw your knock sensor back in...seems like JB weld will harden enough for your sensor to pick up the knock

Outside = 12mm x 1.25
Inside = 8mm x 1.25

I just took a nut and welded it to my block. Worked perfect.

I am thinking of welding a nut to the block on my 2.3 block.

Not sure what thread it was. So here it is again.

You can order inserts from http://mscdirect.com part number 82496860 @ $4.05 for carbon steel or 02232361 @ $13.71 for stainless + shipping of course...

Thanks Gary!!

While we are talking about knock sensors.....is there a better one we can put in there??? I have been reading where some of the turbo guys are getting phantom knock which is pushing up the timing

its been rumored that if you wrap the threads with pipe tape or whatever its called that it helps with that phantom knock...

or you can desensitize is with hpt.

Not really. You can trim back the attack rate, or how much timing it pulls, but not the frequencies it reads.

Most standalones use the 1-wire GM knock sensor, so I would say it is the better one to use.

I had a lot phantom knock on the dyno. I may need to try that 1 wire.

Is the newer knock sensor ( 99+ ) the 1 wire version or is it the other way around ??

Older one is the 1 wire. I'm not saying it is better, but I have seen it used on many standalones.
