Replacing engine, ideas?
Wednesday, November 04, 2009 7:54 AM

Im going to be replacing the high mileage ld9 this winter, and wanted some ideas on what can be done with the new engine before I drop it in. Dont want to tear the engine apart, its only a dd. Will be replacing all the old with new like water pump, timing chain, head gasket ect. But anything else you guys can think of to give it a bit of a face lift.

I was going to suggest secret cams but you have a 96, and cant get it tuned.

Screw it. Put the quad4 HO in.

Even untuned, the secret cams are better than the stock cams.

Secret cams, 2.3 intake manifold and tb, header(pacesetter is cheap and decent), lighter crank pulley, and if you dont mind tearing into the bottom end and dont wana spend alot of money the 2.3 pump swap is a must.

I have an HO intake manifold with shaved runners painted black if your interested

Just get a LG0/LD2 Quad.... make your own "down pipe" and PS line, but its easy.

I was thinking about all the above. Only thing is Im not that comfortable drilling holes in my block. I read the sticky on the 2.3 pump and it seems straight foward. I would do it if anyone want to give me hand .

What exactly is involved in this swap. I know theres tons of them in the yards around here.

Also what are the differences between a 95-99 ld9 and a 2000+ ld9? What is needed to drop in a 2000+ ld9 into a pre 99 car?

2000+ has no EGR. Knock sensor is different. Thats about it.

Get a LG0 or LD2. Its a shortcut to building an LD9.

Ok i Found a low mileage ld9 out of an 01 cheap. I know I will have to drill and tap for the bigger knock sensor. Anything else needs to be done for it to work? Whats the case with having no EGR?

I donlt think so.

Using a 2000+ motor in your car you are just going to use everything from your car. So you will still have EGR.

yup... not by much, maybe 5 or 10 hp, and only above 3k rpm, but it is better than stock for sure.

So going with the 01 motor I pretty much just have to strip it down . And Use the intake/exhaust mans, fuel rail, injectors and sensors from my 96?

You may need to swap over the EGR stuff IF the 01 has the previsions for an EGR. don't quote me on that though.

01's dont come with an egr.

you can remove it though and just make/buy a block off plate. no big deal as long as you dont mind living with a CEL
