I know with the 2.2's on the 96 and 97 years you can't interchange them. If you try to use a 96 ICM with a 97 computer or vice versa you can't get it to start. Not sure on how the 97's does with newer years, but it could be the same case where you're not getting any spark because the 97 ICM and 98 computer aren't agreeing.

Ignition Control Module. It's the part that your coil packs mount to.

I'm not sure if this helps you, or you may have already known, but the 95-97 motoris different than 98+

Not sure on why it stalls. Best of luck

I know switching from 96 to 97 on our racecar you had to change wiring harness/computer/cluster and everything or that's how we did it. Had to take coils off the icm 96 and put on the ICM of the 97 and put back together. Had to also reset the anti-theft also. Sensors and all we switched over too.

I thought 96 & 97 were the same?

May have been a typo 96 and 97 are identical and i did finally accomplish the 97- motor in the 98+ swapped entire under hood harness.... also make sure if you do this swap if you have a digital ipc then it has to be swapped to a mechanical thats the only problem ive had with the swap so far
