What engine parts have you broken?
Saturday, February 09, 2013 8:57 AM
Hi All,
Per the subject line, I'd like to create a thread that would be helpful for those building engines.
I'm only posting it here, but hopefully the boost and nitrous folks will see it too.

No trash talking please, just reply with:
Engine type
Component that failed
Setup used
Circumstances
Who made the part
If an installation error, please admit it.

feel free to comment/add to the list.

thanks,

dennis

Engine type: 3400/3500 hybrid
Component that failed: Intake manifold
Circumstances: idling
Who made the part: GM
Injector was wired backwards and blew the intake apart
What did you replace it with: Fixed it with JB weld and still using it.

Also broke the bracket that holds my tranny in on the drivers side. Its an HM282. Broke it cruising at 70mph and destroyed both CV axles and the front and rear engine mount in the process.

On the inside my car looks like a fighter jet.

Engine type: Supercharged L61 Ecotec; stock block, ported head with +1mm valves, supertech springs, comp stage 3 cams

Setup used: Standard LSJ "kit"
Circumstances: Idle after 10 miles of breaking in motor
Who made the part: GM
If an installation error, please admit it: Not that i know of
What did you replace it with: replaced whole motor with a LSJ

Engine type-98+ln2
Component that failed-piston ring lands
Setup used- single fogger wet kit 75 shot on tr6 plugs
Circumstances- no timing pulled via msd dis2 box while doing holeshot
Who made the part-gm
If an installation error, please admit it.- I had the dis2 installed pulling timing and slowly put the timing back to stock over the course of 13 bottles and it just made expensive noises one night.

Engine type-98+ ln2 and f23 getrag
Component that failed- trans diff exploded into multiple peices.
Setup used-stock
Circumstances- rush hour traffic under 25mph
Who made the part-gm
If an installation error, please admit it.- this happened at roughly 40k miles but after i replaced the motor that i poped on the bottle. Chances are all the abuse of driving the car hard on and off the bottle caused it to pop as well.

Engine type: LD9 with 4T40E
Component that failed: Torque Converter, torque converter shudder and ballooning
Setup used: bolt ons, and B&M shift-plus
Circumstances: drag racing... a lot, trans temp was VERY hot.
Who made the part, GM, Factory installed, probably needed a fluid change....which happened right after this.
If an installation error, please admit it., Roughly 60,000 miles on it. Replaced with a yank 3000 stall, and currently on another stock stall until I install my new motor. Then the Yank will go back in.

Engine type: 06, L61 Eco with F23
Component that failed: Shift Fork---died going into thrid at high RPM
Setup used: Stock
Circumstances: Being a dumb ass, had less than 25,000 miles if I remember correctly.
Who made the part: GM
If an installation error, please admit it.: Factory installed, fixed under warranty.

Engine type : L61
component failure : Upper hose got chewed up by blower pulley

2000 2.4 5 speed z24

cylinder 3 exhuast valve spring broke, lifter jammed in the bored cam lobe wiped out and lifter fell apart into peices, valve went threw top of cyl 3 piston, drove it to work and home like that for over 2 weeks with a dead miss on cylinder 3 and no second gear, LD9s just dont give up!

1985 IROC Z28 5.0 TPI 700rf b&m shift kit 9 bolt 3.73 posi disc brake rear

after i sold it kid over reved the hell out of it, snapped 2 rods, which somehow swung up taking the cam out and sending a 4" long section of it (3 lobes long) threw the side of the oil pan between the motor mount and the starter, along with what looks like 3 bearings and 2 lifters and half of a pushrod. (sooo wish i could been there to see that happen)

on a good not the 5.0 is out trans is redone rear is redone and new motor will be in soon (sitting on a stand, wheathers been nasty)

If an installation error, please admit it: not that i know of but i didnt do the work, bought it that way

Amateurs

Engine type : L61 Ecotec on all accounts
Component that failed (chronologically): factory piston ring lands (6x), bent factory rods (2x), one chewed factory head and valvetrain, melted Wiseco 8.9:1 piston, destroyed cylinder wall in cylinder #3 which ate yet another Wiseco piston and all the valves in cylinder #3, synchronizers in 2nd (3x) 3rd (2x) & 4th (1x), detonated both spider gears in the stock f23 diff, seized front balance shaft and snapped waterpump chain (exteneded time at 8k + rpm with factory balance shafts), seized all 4 eagle rods (my EF up), scored 1 crank in the process, broken 2 factory upper engine mounts......and I can't remember breaking anything else.

Circumstances: all except the seized rods and scored crank were racing and heat related (high rpm for extended periods), seized rods and crank was a failed attempt at making a block off plug for the balance shaft delete when the factory balance shaft bearing was previously overheated and backed out when I tried to put the plug in - ended up blocking off all oil flow to the rods and crank - cooked the whole bottom end and block in about 30 seconds...shortest rebuild ever

All parts were OEM except where noted above

Pistons were replaced with more factory pistons and then a mix and match set was used when I busted 2 more only went forged when I didn't have any more factory pistons laying around to put in the block, decided to do forged rods at the same time as the last set of pistons gave up the ghost at 17 psi and 2 of the rods had a slight bend to them, replaced bad trans with good OEM trans for the diff and synchros, balance shaft delete kit (home brew as I have a lathe), rksport upper engine mount

Everybody love carnage pics...

Seized balance shaft

Detonated spider gears

One of the many factory pistons

Another one

When the diff went out

Funny, she doesn't look like she's evil....but she sure acts like a brat!

2.2 L Ecotec, P&P Head, Stage 3 Comp Cams, Supertech 76 lb Spring kit, Supertech Oversized Valves, Wiseco 8.9:1 CR Pistons, Eagle H-Beam Rods, Home-Built Turbo Kit T3/T4 57 Trim Intercooled, 78 lb/hr Racetronix Hi-Z injectors, Aeromotive FPR, Racetronix f body fuel pump,MEGASQUIRT MS3 + MS3X Finally street tuned on 21 lbs! Now if only I could get it to hook....

Engine type: '02 LN2
Component that failed: Valve Stem
Setup used: Stock bottom end with all bolt ons (Header, intake, rockers, msd ignition, ported head w/ +1mm valves, etc)
Circumstances: Normal Driving (I was leaving a parking space on a beer run of all things)
Who made the part: I forget, they were stainless +1mm valves from a head I bought already assembled/ported.
If an installation error, please admit it: Probably. I bought the head with the port/polish work already done and the valves already installed. I was running the motor to 6200RPM or so (6500 rev limit) but I have been running to 7k on my new motor with stock valves and its been fine with much more abuse so far.

What did you replace it with: The motor was replaced with a stock junkyard motor that was later torn apart and built with forged internals and turbocharged.

Pics of the damage (we all love some carnage):
